DPR Construction has the opportunity to work on some of the biggest projects across the globe. But rooted in the company's culture is a focus on applying excellence to projects of any scale. Small projects bring a set of challenges of their own: tight schedules, limited budget, thinly spread teams, and, most of the time, existing conditions. Virtual design and construction (VDC) can play a big role in delivering successful outcomes, but it takes the right mix of people, process, and technology. Join us for an engaging session where we'll walk through how DPR adapts to the unique challenges of smaller projects. We'll talk about the technology we almost always apply (spoiler: it's reality capture) and what tech we leave at home. MEP fabrication has been a hot topic for many years. It seems only the larger companies are taking advantage of this opportunity. We are starting see fabrication appear in instructions to bidders and, in some cases, demands from owners. Could MEP fabrication work for a small or mid-size company? In this class we will discuss the fundamental elements that make a successful fabrication shop and we’ll explore the possibilities of making fabrication functional for a smaller company. We will talk about material flow, people flow, automation, equipment placement, bulk buying, material movement, cultural/behavior changes, software, Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination, effects on job-site safety, early turnover, and packaging for delivery to job sites. This will be an interactive session with plenty of time for questions during and after the presentation.

Who hasn’t had this situation—receiving data from a planning partner who’s also using AutoCAD Architecture software or AutoCAD MEP software and content that should be added doesn’t display. Or, content that is displayed doesn’t look like you expect, or doesn’t meet the firm’s graphical design standards. So, where should you start the modifications, and, more importantly, how do you apply them? The class will walk through how to navigate through the swamp of settings that are possible within the Display Manager, showcasing its possibilities and perks. We’ll explain an effective workflow when starting from scratch, or when dealing with data coming from an outside source who’s also working with AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP, without losing what others might have defined.

In this session, we will learn how to create drawings that have automated schedule tags on equipment and different equipment schedules. Learn how property set definitions (PSD), schedule tags, and schedule tables can help automate the documentation process. Rather than managing disconnected information in the traditional Microsoft Excel import method, let's use an automated set of features specific for these tasks. By developing these PSDs, tags, and schedule tables, and putting these in your company’s standard templates, you will have an efficient way to work.

The New Crystal Bridges Museum pushed the envelope of what 3D modeling can do both in engineering design and project delivery. In this class, you will learn how the design team overcame tremendous technical design and interoperability challenges to deliver a stunning built product. With many projects being vastly different from one another, it can be hard to figure out what exactly your BIM (Building Information Modeling) and virtual design and construction (VDC) needs will be for your project. AECOM Hunt has had the fortune to work on and coordinate many different projects. We have learned that, while perhaps similar, no 2 projects or teams are the same, and that each must be handled uniquely. During this course we will share our experiences on 4 projects: Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Redwings; Aloft Magnificent Mile, Chicago; Mount Carmel Hospital, Grove City; and Kite Pharma-Cell Therapy. Other topics will include BIM (Building Information Modeling) stages such as coordination, completion, and turnover.

AutoCAD Plant 3D has quickly become a premier solution for piping design in the plant community. For a complete plant project deliverable, we need to understand the best practices in being interoperable with additional Autodesk® products. While some of these products,such as AutoCAD® Revit® Structure and Autodesk® Navisworks® software, exist in Autodesk® Plant Design Suite, there is also a need outside of the suite to create mechanical, HVAC, and electrical models. Learn how to utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) and technology to the most opportune level on highly technical projects. We will discuss cloud storage and intellectual property issues, BIM tools, lean principles, paperless efforts, facilities management, and the integrated project delivery (IPD) project advantages and disadvantages.

When you have a complex project where Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination is absolutely necessary, and you add to the equation that design consultants and all of the subcontractors have no BIM experience . . . you are in a challenging position. The intention of this class is to give you an idea of the implemented BIM workflow in a temple project located in Argentina (South America), where BIM use is not developed yet in this region. However, the proposed implemented workflow (single-source work-share partner) is applicable to many other situations, even in advanced BIM markets. We will share this experience and discuss pros and cons of the approach, results achieved, and proposed next steps. We’ll go all the way from Revit software design models, to coordination with Navisworks software and Autodesk 360 cloud-computing platform, to fabrication models with AutoCAD MEP software versus Revit software and shop drawings generation, to approval process. A complete workflow analysis from start to finish.

Imagine a new construction—a house, a room, a building, anything. It will most certainly have walls, and of different types. While internal walls help divide up space, external walls must be weatherproof to withstand the test of time. Architects, site workers, and construction managers need to visualize these different styles of walls in designs and documentation. Such variations in styles are a norm not only in walls, but also in other objects such as stairs, windows, doors, ducts, and so on. How does one keep track of these various styles in different drawings and projects? As the scale of construction increases, so does the complexity. Our class introduces the concept of the Styles Browser Palette in AutoCAD Architecture software (Building Design Suite software, AutoCAD MEP) through live demonstration and examples. We’ll establish the productivity gains achievable (2x/3x or more, based on object type) while consolidating, visualizing, and applying styles to objects using the Styles Browser Palette versus without it.

In this hands-on lab, you’ll get an overview of the AutoCAD 2019 Architecture toolset—specifically the details feature—and you’ll learn how to make your own custom detail components. Learn how easy it is to make your own details from within the Details interface without having to manually create or edit complicated XML files. Once we make a custom detail component, we’ll use AutoCAD software’s native Annotation Scaling tools to complete a real-world detail. This lab will help you supercharge your detailing productivity.

Customization is a key feature in AutoCAD software that makes it different from any other CAD tool on the market. Configuring user interface, modifying the files within AutoCAD software can greatly improve productivity when using AutoCAD software. By customizing AutoCAD software, a user can streamline different product workflows and enable creation of new ones that can improve the company works. The workflows might range from importing styles and layers into AutoCAD software to extracting information from AutoCAD software into a database. If you created blocks in AutoCAD software, chances are that you have already understood some of the customization features in AutoCAD software. However, we will cover some intermediate and advanced customization techniques in AutoCAD software that can greatly impact your productivity and enable you as a power AutoCAD software user in customization space. When you start your next project, chances are that you will tend to customize AutoCAD software and enhance your design or drafting workflow.

Do you maintain AutoCAD platform tools for a bunch of users? Do you have to support branch offices? If so, this class will help you get your AutoCAD environment under optimal control via AutoLISP® customization, CUI customization, and a unique way of synchronizing networked content with the user's machine to achieve maximum speed. External reference (xref) is one of the key concepts in AutoCAD software. In AutoCAD 2018, we addressed this pain by providing smarter options that help reduce the pain created by a broken reference-and even if you're in a quagmire of missing references, we provide tools that will help you smartly search and fix the broken paths. And we all love layers-layers are a drafter's best friend-but often the challenge is how to effectively manage xref layer properties in the host drawing and the ability to control the xref layer property overrides without the need of having to change SYSVARs umpteen times. In this class, I intend to show how to effectively use the 3 key system variables-XREFOVERRIDE, VISRETAIN, and VISRETAINMODE-to choose either all xref layer properties to always sync, or selectively choose a few layer properties to sync and reload and keep the overrides for the other properties without the need to change SYSVAR values and open and close your host drawing file.

To work effectively, AutoCAD Civil 3D software requires all sorts of data, including Templates, Tool Palettes, Catalogs, Subassemblies, and so on. Now, add in a need for users to be more mobile. How does someone understand what this data is, maintain an updated standard set, and enable users to be mobile and work away from the office—all with the company standards in place? That’s where this class comes in. We will summarize all data required to make AutoCAD Civil 3D software simply purr. We’ll then teach you how to use Windows Batch files (no experience required) to set up a simple CAD data-syncing system between user machines and your server master copy. This will enable users to disconnect from the company network and still have AutoCAD Civil 3D software fully functional. When users log back into the network, they will automatically get any updates made to the CAD data. Sound like a pipe dream? It’s not. It’s simple and easy to set up.
