In this session, we will explore methodologies and workflows to prevent files from getting corrupted due to internal and external factors. We will review 7 things that cause drawing slowness, and we’ll show how to repair the drawings.

The U.K. government has mandated that all government-funded projects must be delivered to Level 2 Building Information Modeling (BIM) by 2016. In a breakout from U.K. convention, companies have used AutoCAD Civil 3D software as the highway design tool for the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model and Revit software and Structural Bridge Design software for the major bridge structures. While 3D BIM models have been around for many years, there usually has not been any attendant data attached (beyond the inherent geometry) to models generated from AutoCAD Civil 3D software. We will discuss various strategies and methods for creating additional asset data in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and propose and demonstrate a method of attaching additional data to the BIM model and linking this to both the AutoCAD Civil 3D software entities and the Navisworks objects for Field BIM software. As part of this process, we will also discuss how Civil 3D objects may be used to represent real-world assets in the BIM model. Finally we will explore the result of customisation using .NET plug-ins to Civil 3D to further enhance the ability to link data to the BIM model.

Many utilities today find themselves with legacy mapping systems that were installed 10 to 15 years ago or more. Those legacy systems have been beneficial in assisting utilities to organize their data and make improvements in their ability to visualize and understand their infrastructures. But strides in technology have helped the tools for managing the data in those legacy systems to become much more user friendly and “out of the box” than systems of the past. AutoCAD Map 3D Enterprise software now includes rich features that can model electric infrastructure with the power of AutoCAD software as the user interface. NV Energy has made the transition and uses AutoCAD Map 3D Enterprise software to map and manage its infrastructure assets more effectively. We will discover the value that you can gain from an enterprise geographic information system (GIS) and hear examples from other utility organizations in a roundtable setting.

As part of executing an enterprise licensing program with Autodesk, Inc., Arizona Public Service (APS) was looking for a better way to manage over 800 desktop installations of Autodesk products. APS's implementation project included: establishing a Citrix farm on 18 servers across 2 data centers and migrating all desktop users; reducing application support needs for 800 users on multiple product versions spanning 8 years by defining 30 Citrix publications to manage all users on a single version of Autodesk products; incorporating custom palettes and tools within the login process to get away from personally defined palettes; using Active Directory to manage application access for all users; and migrating engineering drawings from desktops, user directories, and unit shares to a redundant network file share. This session will address project challenges, system architecture, lessons learned, and successes.

Have you ever wondered if there's an easier way to ensure that all drawing production staff has equal access to the company's CAD standards? This class will provide an overview of a variety of configuration, productivity, and management solutions that you can deploy using AutoCAD tool palettes. Tool palettes should not be limited to sourcing warehoused block/symbol libraries; they can also facilitate company-specific CAD software configurations, along with a multitude of other tools, to assist CAD managers with the elimination of inconsistencies across workstations, projects, and even offices. This class will provide a modern perspective of legacy workflows that still are crucial parts of day-to-day civil/survey consulting processes, proposals, and workflows. Take advantage of the tools provided with the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, and relearn previous workflows that may have changed in recent releases of Civil 3D software, AutoCAD Map 3D software, ReCap software, and other tools.

Only One. AutoCAD software introduces a whole new suite of toolsets for the AutoCAD user. The AutoCAD Map 3D toolset goes far beyond mapping, but lets AutoCAD drawings be connected and work with data from many different systems. Not only does AutoCAD Map 3D let the user import and export data, but also it can create live connections to geographic information system (GIS) data, asset management systems, system inventories, and other enterprise data systems. It lets the user add attributes to all AutoCAD objects, not just blocks. It includes specialized tools to clean up drawings and label objects directly from object attributes. We will touch on the workflows the traditional AutoCAD user needs in order to take advantage of these tools using real-life examples.

GIS data collection and field work is a huge part of GIS and infrastructure development, maintenance, and management. Knowing where assets are located and tracking attribute data for those assets is a costly and time-consuming effort. This class will show how AutoCAD Map 3D software can be used with earthmine imagery to collect, view, edit, and measure GIS assets. earthmine imagery is a street-level 360-degree, 3D image that can be brought into AutoCAD Map 3D projects and used in combination with existing GIS data and to collect new GIS data inside the photo. The class will show detailed examples of working with AutoCAD Map 3D and earthmine imagery, as well as highlighting project implementation and planning strategies that were used in a successful earthmine implementation at the City of Grand Forks, ND.

Sacramento Area Sewer District (SASD) chose AutoCAD® Map 3D Enterprise software industry models as the front-end GIS application for creating and editing sewer assets. SASD needed a synchronization solution so that the SASD enterprise GIS (ArcGIS) could be updated accordingly. The long-transaction functionality (jobs) in AutoCAD® Map 3D Enterprise industry models provides a framework where inserted, edited, and deleted features can easily be queried for synchronization. In this roundtable session, we discuss how to use AutoCAD® Map 3D jobs in conjunction with FME data conversion software to synchronize Esri ArcGIS.

It can be difficult to develop a sound business case and secure funding to implement new technology. This class will discuss an Autodesk Consulting engagement by a major electric and gas utility to develop a strategic implementation plan and business case for the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for both the transmission workflow and the substation design engineering and construction workflow. The Solution will alter the current design and construction management processes, and it includes InfraWorks software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Inventor software, Inventor Publisher software, Substation Design Solution software, Vault software, and BIM 360 software. In this class we will discuss the process followed to analyze the business requirements, develop a Solution, and formulate an implementation plan and cost estimate. The class will highlight an approach to benefit quantification, which includes preparing a net cash-flow analysis and calculating the financial metrics required to present and win funding approval from senior management.

This talk will demonstrate a streamlined geographic information system (GIS) / mapping workflow developed by CaseIntel Corporation and Autodesk, Inc., for electric utilities to support a highly automated design, build, operate, and maintain workflow. This process uses AutoCAD 360 web app, ReCap software, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanning in the field; AutoCAD Map 3D software and CaseIntel NetGIS for electric utility mapping; InfraWorks 360 software and Infrastructure Map Server software for visualization; and AutoCAD Utility Design software for designing new services.

This class will cover the workflows and processes for integrating AutoCAD Map 3D software with PAVER pavement maintenance management system. We will examine the various issues involved in managing the spatial components of branches, sections, and test locations that are evaluated in PAVER and visualized in AutoCAD Map 3D software. We will showcase the use of Industry Model within AutoCAD Map 3D software as a repository for managing these pavement features. Within AutoCAD software, we will show how to use custom topology tools to validate and fix errors in the pavement geometry. And we will demonstrate how, using display maps and map layers, we can symbolize Pavement Condition Indices (PCI) and other conditions evaluated in PAVER to present pavement structures in a map layout for printing. This session features AutoCAD Map 3D.
