This case study will explore the first-ever commercial drone operations permitted within the rim of the Grand Canyon, and how the imagery captured was used to inform a critical water infrastructure project. Grand Canyon National Park, in Northern Arizona, is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It encompasses an impressive 278 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands and averages more than 10 miles wide. To support work to modernize the Grand Canyon Water System—which serves thousands of residents and millions of annual visitors—we used drones, surveying, and LiDAR technology to acquire high-resolution orthomosaic images and point clouds. In this digital transformation success story, we also employed Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD Civil, ReCap, Revit, and other Autodesk products.

Those same companies typically have an inventory database that is either incorrect or incomplete, but that has value nonetheless, since it may be used to connect said assets with other enterprise solutions, including maintenance and operations management. In this technical instruction session, we will present a workflow for the end-to-end digitalization of a portfolio of facilities using a component-based approach. This workflow starts with any existing inventory, uses it in Autodesk Construction Cloud Assets and Forms to capture on-site data, then switches to Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro software and Autodesk Docs software for the intelligent modeling of the facilities, and then again moves back to the Assets functionality for audit and validation.

Serial hyperscale, co- location, and "edge" clients are driving innovation in design and industrialization, using digital libraries of configurable, scalable solutions for repeatable, standardized designs that can be amended to suit local codes and site constraints. Benefits include that solutions capture and optimize for a wide range of stakeholder needs. In addition, creating rules-based relationships allows design automation, and site-specific designs are created in hours. The approach facilitates supply chain input—using standard products reduces lead times and alleviates pressure on suppliers. Individual elements can be refined "offline" and reintroduced when ready—critical for bringing in new technology for cooling and decarbonization without total redesign. As a partner to Delta Air Lines, Burns & McDonnell (BMcD) reached for the sky on this unique terminal design. The program began as a renovation of the existing terminals and evolved into the design of a brand-new consolidated terminal, which included four concourses, a head house, a taxi stack, and a parking garage. In this endeavor, BMcD joined forces with the client, the subconsultants, and the construction manager for a true collaboration. BMcD used an array of Autodesk products across the entire program lifecycle, from design through construction, at the heart of which was Autodesk Construction Cloud. Autodesk Construction Cloud enabled BMcD and 25 subconsultants to work seamlessly and efficiently on a single platform, across multiple office locations, and through a pandemic. Keeping the terminals fully operational continuously through construction was critical. This project was only possible with the entire team engaged in real time on Autodesk Construction Cloud. In the end, the ability to collaborate allowed for an efficient and prestigious design deliverable.
