Revit software is recognized as a building design tool for architectural, structural, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning). At Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP (WR&A), the Water Wastewater discipline saw the benefits that others were experiencing using Revit software and decided to take Revit software to the next level for use with large diameter pipe used in process plants. With only AutoCAD software 2D experience, the switch to Revit software identified changes needed within the design process and workflow. These changes ultimately led to a better-coordinated design for clients, and Revit software is now the tool of choice for many Water Wastewater projects. This session will demonstrate how WR&A's Water Wastewater disciplines utilized Revit software for more than plumbing.

4D time simulation in Navisworks software for construction projects are often complicated BIM (Building Information Modeling) services to be used on a daily basis. Reasons can include problems in model coordination, time and element mismatches, time model execution availability, and more. With this approach, we will use the Dynamo player and Dynamo workflows over Revit 2021 software to clean, manage, label, and even create a time schedule so 4D simulation can be easily created and the communication proposal facilitates model coordination and execution. We will cover several routine workflows so that all elements for any type of intelligent model are aligned clean and useful for project management, enabling us to link the model and time schedules with Navisworks in record time. This instructional demo is the synthesis of 13 years of simulations from different projects to make 4D simulation a required task for all projects.

Many of the design applications we use today are platform agnostic; they can run on Windows or Mac OS without issue. However, most of these applications have differences or variations that can make loading one version versus another a bit jarring. In this class, we’ll focus on three different ways of running your design applications on an Apple computer: natively, virtually, and through disk partitioning. We’ll look at using native applications like AutoCAD for Mac software, using virtualization options like Parallels to run Windows as an application inside Mac OS, and dividing a hard drive into multiple sections that will run Windows as a separate operating system on your laptop or desktop. There are many factors to consider with any of these options, and we’ll review the pros and cons of each, as well as best practices.

This class will provide an overview of BIM implementation on one of the world's largest projects, the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks project which includes two massive lock facilities - one on the Atlantic side and another on the Pacific - each with three chambers and complex mechanical and electrical systems for locking Neo-Panamax vessels.BIM technology was used to manage the design and construction of this complex project.What if we started the Panama Canal Expansion today, with the dramatic advances in BIM that have occurred in only the last few years? With InfraWorks - which was not available during the planning phase - we can propose site design and road layout with GIS information. With Revit Parts - which was not available during the design phase - we can slice a model easily with sketch lines to produce the lift models for the concrete pouring sequence.With BIM 360 cloud services - also newly available - we can work better across regions and continents for design collaboration.Integrating these BIM tools with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies, we can now better visualize our design during the construction process. This presentation will present a "what if" scenario, to study how the design of this mega-project would proceed today, and to propose a new design template for the future.

A carefully planned BIM workflow enabled the design team to create both coordination and structural analysis models for a structure with highly complex geometry extremely fast and efficiently. Using AutoCAD® as a central hub of geometric definitions, the design team was able to communicate seamlessly between Rhinoceros®, Revit®-based software, and SAP2000®. This resulted in the architecture, coordination, and analysis models all matching each other perfectly while also making it easy to track changes and update the models as the design progressed.

Currently there are many engineering software systems designed to efficiently evaluate different structural solutions and/or strategies for reinforced concrete buildings. However, turning the adopted solution into a full Revit model (including rebars in RC elements) is still a very time-consuming task that diminishes the efficiency obtained in the previous analysis/design phase. Native Revit tools for rebar detailing are helpful if structural elements are limited in number, but they lack the required efficiency when working in middle- to large-size projects. In this class, you'll see the challenges faced, and the workflow and solutions used to develop a Dynamo tool that communicates via API with the finite element analysis software CSI ETABS 2016. This tool automatically puts the reinforcement of different structural elements (such as regular and irregular walls, columns, and beams) into the Revit model.

This class will explore the utilization of Autodesk, Inc., products in the development of early phase energy models that help guide the Design Team in the development of sustainable and cost-effective Building Solutions. We will cover the use of Vasari software as an early tool for conceptual level analysis and how we can effectively hand off this geometry to more detailed modeling engines for additional analysis. We will also explore Revit software as a tool for developing complex building geometries for energy analysis that maintain the flexibility to be rapidly updated as building design advances. These strategies also compliment Autodesk cloud-computing services, including the Autodesk 360 cloud-computing platform for data storage, as well as options for rendering and daylighting in the cloud for additional analysis and development of presentation materials.
