This case study explores how Curiosity 3D—an Autodesk Learning Partner—is using the power of Autodesk Fusion software and 3D printing to revolutionize education in India by making online education hands-on. The idea was born at a time when the world stopped—the COVID-19 era. Universities and schools were shut, but education found a way and went online, and learning became e-learning. However, this was at the expense of practical hands-on learning experiences. Learn how Curiosity solved this by shipping 3D printers to students' homes! While Fusion was taught online, students 3D-printed projects at home. The design and make journey never stopped. This session will take you through examples of similar innovative strategies that are driving education in emerging markets like India. It will also explore how market challenges—such as limited lab infrastructure, accessibility, and affordability—can be overcome while maintaining hands-on experience and effectively preparing for the future of work.

Since 80% of carbon is already locked into a product by the decisions made at the design phase, making good design and manufacturing choices is key to producing products with lower carbon impact. However, today, designers and engineers lack the data and tools to inform their design and manufacturing decisions, all while new and upcoming regulations are forcing designers and manufacturers to produce their products in more-sustainable ways. To tackle this issue, this talk will introduce Autodesk's new Manufacturing Sustainability Insights tool. Created in partnership with Gravity Climate, this interactive manufacturing-impact exploration tool for Autodesk Fusion 360 will provide users with valuable insights into the carbon emissions associated with producing their designs via various manufacturing methods, enabling users to make better informed decisions that support sustainable manufacturing practices, resulting in better products for the planet.

Generative design is used as an optimization technique to achieve a reasonable trade-off between weight and reliability for the control arm plate of a double wishbone suspension assembly of a Formula Student race car. Generative design is applied in order to develop a low-weight design alternative to a standard control-arm-plate design. In addition to an optimal material distribution, the generative design methodology provides several design outcomes for different materials and fabrication techniques. Based on the generative design recommendation, the print was developed with Ti-6Al-4V using SLM 280 2.0, which deposits layers of 60 ?m thickness, by employing a bidirectional powder recoating technology. The entire printing process is conducted in an inert atmosphere, filled with argon gas, with two 400 W IPG fiber lasers that scan the layers at a build rate of 113 cubic cm/hr. And the support removal is conducted using wire cutting.

The class will show you an automotive interior design workflow. It will show how fast you can get to a physical prototype of an interior part. The workflow starts with quick concept modeling using Alias software. After that, we hand out the model to Autodesk Fusion 360 software for additional steps like physical model making and manufacturing cost evaluation. This early phase concept workflow can massively speed up your decision-making process for interior parts.

Custom classic car and hot rod builds often require many custom parts that are bespoke to the vehicle. In this session, we'll use several custom components created for the Iron Maven vehicle—built by Girl Gang Garage and featured at SEMA and in MotorTrend—to demonstrate workflows for designing and fabricating the components from the ground up. The workflow demonstrations will focus on cosmetic and mechanical components, with an example of a 3D-scanning-to-freeform-modeling workflow for cosmetic components and a measurement-and-fit-check-to-parametric-modeling workflow for mechanical components (and mechanical features). Finally, examples of finishing 3D-printed parts with production-quality finishes will show workflows for fabrication.

SimaPro, a sustainability partner, and ProtoTech, a technical consultant and reseller, are building a POC web app to demo at AU 2023, showing a web-based sustainability analysis workflow of an Autodesk Fusion 360 design. SimaPro requires mass, weight, and material to perform the sustainability analysis. Mass and weight are mass properties, meaning the company needs to extract and store mass properties for components in PIM so that SimaPro can access this data to perform its analysis in a web-based environment outside of Fremont. Currently, physical properties are extracted only inside the Fusion 360 canvas. PPE is a scalable solution that enables users to extract physical properties on-demand outside the Fusion 360 canvas using GraphQL APIs. Physical properties extraction trigger is also integrated with Fusion 360 workflows like on-milestone creation, as well as view physical properties in Fusion Team.

The demand for medical devices is rapidly growing with a forecast of global annual sales to reach nearly US$800 billion by 2030. But a one-size-fits-all approach in surgery often results in major complications such as infection, delayed or incomplete healing, and revision surgeries that contribute to diminishing clinical outcomes. A new approach with design thinking is now necessary to help solve these challenges. Researchers at University of Birmingham, Autodesk, Manufacturing Technology Centre (UK), and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust have developed a novel design framework to create personalized knee implants from a CT scan using generative design for treating arthritis. This class will showcase how generative design can be implemented in an all-encompassing digital workflow to explore customized devices and make a positive impact to improve patient outcomes. The team will also discuss the fabrication of functional prototypes using cutting-edge manufacturing, post-processing, and validation techniques.

3D printing has become increasingly popular on construction sites, allowing firms to facilitate the construction process and decrease carbon footprint. It's a challenging exercise, due to the size of elements and the fact that they can't be reinforced, nor can the finishes be easily achieved. In order to democratize 3D printing, the decision was made to tackle the problem differently. The creation of 3D-parametric-printed formworks, urban furniture, or complex beam nodes/intersection is automated. This enables the reduction of production time and costs, as these elements can be produced in an infinite quantity and easily mounted on site. It also enables carbon footprint reduction by getting rid of wooden formworks and trucks for concrete pouring, and reducing the waste and time involved in creating those elements. The use of parametric elements to create these objects allows a full customization and replication. A deployment kit has been created for their subcontractors. Spie batignolles is becoming the first contractor-printer!

In this class, we'll demonstrate a project that uses Automated Modeling to design a conceptual part. We'll then take that concept and refine it to become a functional, manufacturable part using Generative Design.

New manufacturing techniques and innovative materials are making us rethink infrastructure creation, but they've also raised a need for closer structural health monitoring. Autodesk Research collaborated with MX3D to create the world's first 3D-printed steel bridge, and then with Dar Al-Handasah to 3D print a series of bridges from sustainable (recycled and recyclable) material. We drove the effort to add "smarts” to both bridges via sensor networks that capture data about their use. The bridges were modeled as digital twins using innovative visualization technology that has been integrated into Autodesk Platform Services and Autodesk Tandem software. These twins visualize the stress on the bridges' structures as people walk across them. Given the popularity of the 5-meter Dar bridge exhibited at Autodesk University 2022 in New Orleans, we wanted to show more details of our work on these iconic projects, and how they might influence the future of smart and sustainable infrastructure.
