Teams were able to make sense of large and complex data sets, uncover hidden insights, and automate decision-making processes.

Machine learning is a much talked about and relatively new way for creating artificial intelligence systems and applying them to complicated problems. KLH Engineers is applying artificial intelligence to solve challenging problems in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. This class is a case study on applying machine learning to the problem of MEP element placement based on BIM (Building Information Modeling) data provided by other consultants. Attendees will discover how KLH applied a machine-learning algorithm to classify BIM objects in a room.

To manage the ever-increasing complexity and collaboration in the creation of physical assets for LAIKA's hybrid stop-motion/CG features, a Shotgun-based integrated browser workflow was developed that enables automated resource leveling and scheduling in a centralized system accessible to the entire studio. Highlights include a new custom charting application that integrates with the existing Shotgun infrastructure, as well as the use of Consilium Technology (recently acquired by Autodesk), a new, machine-learning-based, automated resource-leveling system that effectively balances and assigns resources. Together, they turn a time-consuming and error-prone manual leveling process into a fast and automated procedure that generates an accurate, adjustable, easy-to-communicate schedule.

Integrating building performance analysis results in the early stage of conceptual design supports effective design exploration and decision making. Such integration requires domain expertise and can be technically challenging, time consuming, and computationally expensive. Machine learning demonstrates great potential for building seamless workflows that provide faster analysis feedback. However, one of the challenges in the architecture domain is the lack of diverse data sets to train effective prediction models. This talk will provide a brief overview of the potential of machine learning in building analysis-prediction models and demonstrate how we can capitalize on generative design to compensate for the lack of data. We will present a workflow where generative design features for Revit software, Dynamo software, and Insight software are used to generate a synthetic data set for training a machine-learning model for energy-analysis prediction.

In this session, we'll explore the intricacies of drainage design workflows for transportation projects, including rail, roads, and highways. Using Autodesk's InfoDrainage and Civil 3D software, we'll present a streamlined workflow that facilitates the interaction and data exchange between both software solutions, with a special emphasis on drainage for transportation-related projects. One of the key learnings will be spotlighting the data exchange and results migration capabilities between civil design software (Civil 3D) and drainage design software (InfoDrainage), without the interjection of spreadsheets. Additionally, we'll highlight InfoDrainage software's machine learning (ML) deluge feature, with emphasis on its potential to expedite the concept and early planning process by rapidly identifying ponding locations on a site. Testing data showed the ML deluge outperforming traditional deluge by identifying ponding on a site in four seconds compared to more than nine minutes.

Researchers and facility managers at the University of Florida collaborated on implementing Autodesk Tandem software in facilities and asset management (FAM) operations with the goal of understanding how digital twins (DTs) can improve operational efficiency, automate repetitive tasks, and enhance preventative maintenance. Get an in-depth understanding of how we flawlessly integrated sensor and actuator device data using an academic building's Revit model in Tandem to create a DT that monitors facility performance in real time. Explore the benefits that facility managers gain from incorporating operations and maintenance manuals, cut sheets, wayfinding capabilities, and system tracing into DTs, as well as visualizing their occupancy rates and usage. Implemented effectively, DTs can yield significant ROI by fostering efficiency, spurring innovation, and providing a competitive edge. Future plans include creating a campusverse of DTs, using FAM data to transition to cognitive DTs, and using DTs in the formulation of a comprehensive campus FAM strategy.

This session is a high-level strategy road map of how companies with a large project portfolio can use Autodesk Construction Cloud to take pragmatic steps within the Autodesk Construction Cloud user interface to benefit both in the short term and long term. We'll use real-world examples using Amazon Transportation Engineering Services (TES) as a case study. This case study will showcase Autodesk Forma software's new AI-based embodied carbon analysis, built in collaboration with EHDD, examining real-life use cases by Stantec practitioners to evaluate embodied carbon at the earliest stages of design. First, we'll expand on our AU 2023 product demo, exploring Stantec's partnership with Forma, and establishing the user needs and guiding principles that led us to the in-market embodied carbon analysis. Then, Jack Rusk, who leads the EHDD team behind the C.Scale engine that powers the analysis in Forma, will explain how these same user needs manifested in the computational back end, giving a look behind the curtain at the AI model.
