Design evolution means that the concept of intent will change. Where contractors are concerned, the application of software tools to perform in this environment poses new challenges. Contractors are increasingly put to task in order to maintain the construction schedule in this changing environment. However, doing so in an environment of repetitive design changes have become more complex than ever. Small changes can have large impacts with regards to the ripple effect to other systems and the exponential resources necessary to maintain, update coordination, and reschedule the “new” current version of the design concept. These impacts can amount to a significant part of the project’s administrative budget. Understanding the use of software tools and the impacts to resources are now more important than ever. This course will cover the use of software tools to assist in design validation based on priority and change management.

A common workflow issue is managing drawings with CAD Standards issues - blocks on the wrong layer, text with the wrong style or size, etc. I could go on and on about all the issues we face with standards in our AutoCAD files. But taking the time to fix these issues can be a daunting process. In this lab, I will walk you through several tools that AutoCAD offers to speed up this process!

The research, design engineering, and development of a wireless ambulatory Electroencephalogram (EEG ) headset that utilises Brain Computer Interface (BCI) and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) presents a wide range of complex requirements. The team responsible for developing this wireless ambulatory EEG headset is focusing on making the device suitable for patient-managed neurorehabilitation within community (at homes or community centres). Unlike existing commercial EEG headsets, this would be the first device created particularly for unassisted (nonprofessional) usage by patients (or their caregivers) with restricted motor function or with chronic pain. These conditions may be the result of spinal cord injury and/or stroke. This approach provides benefits not only to Healthcare providers (such as occupational therapists) in terms of resource allocation, but also to patients and caregivers by providing access to device that can be used in familiar surroundings and at times that suit. The main challenges that benefit from the application of Fusion 360, generative design, and ReCap are: 1) developing form and structures that are adaptable to range of head sizes and geometries; 2) developing a structure that optimises the location and placement of electrodes; 3) reduction of material usage of key headset components; 4) influences the design with the aim of enhancing comfort, functionality, durability, and interaction. The demonstration will show examples of concept development of the device, ranging from digital to physical test beds that test the interaction between a variety of heads, mechanical properties of the headsets and electrodes. Traditional and rapid prototyping processes have been used throughout the development and where appropriate, these have been tested and evaluated using human factors methods and tools. The interaction and placement of the device is critical to the rehabilitation of the patient. Therefore, the device has to intuitive to use and reliable throughout its application. It is also expected that the device would be used by more than one patient, therefore it has to be easily maintained and serviced. This class will examine the methods and benefits obtained in the implementation of a geotechnical Building Information Modeling (BIM) utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D software and HoleBASE SI for a large transportation project with 118-plus borings within the Seattle area. McMillen Jacobs Associates knew they needed better visualizing methods and improved workflow efficiency when working with geotechnical data than those that the firm's legacy gINT system offered. The firm had a strong desire to utilize the functionality that Autodesk technology offered. The aim was to let this data be easily viewed and exploited in AutoCAD Civil 3D. The class will cover the transition to the AutoCAD Civil 3D / Keynetix solution, why a change was required, the new workflows developed to incorporate both legacy and new data, and the integration between the data management system HoleBASE SI and AutoCAD Civil 3D. This class will cover the uses of the Autodesk 360 cloud services-based products. We will look at the Autodesk 360 Sync service and discuss how to use it with AutoCAD software and AutoCAD LT software. We will cover syncing your files as well as your customization. Do you need to sync everything, or just specific files? We will also look at the Autodesk 360 web app and how it ties to the Autodesk 360 Sync service, and we'll discover how to upload files without using the Autodesk 360 Sync service. Last but not least, we will go over the Autodesk 360 mobile app and how you can use it to view your files in the field and collaborate with others. At the end of this class you will have a much better understanding of each of these features, and you'll know when you really need to use them, or not use them.

This demo will show how to generate a model for a heat sink to be simulated in Autodesk CFD software, optimizing the model with Fusion 360 software and Autodesk Generative Design software. Generative design is a process of iterative design that uses the power of computing to give a designer a very large number of permutations and possibilities that we can fine-tune with several constraints to get an optimum-performing design. This demo will apply this to a real-world model of a heat sink, where we can vary the layout and the geometry of our item quite a lot, based on different constraints, such as material, flow paths, conduction area, cost, and so on. We’ll see how the best permutation models perform, and we’ll go through the decision-making process to achieve the best-performing design.

This unique class will review key workflows required to go from concept design proposals to detailed design cost estimates. Our mission is to create 2 concept-level designs for a new municipal spine roadway and trunk sewer and compare the cost of works for each scenario. We will start with a detailed look at InfraWorks 360 software and demonstrate the workflows required to build our 2 new proposals. Then we will connect our concept-level design to AutoCAD Civil 3D software to detail the roadway and sewer designs. We will look at the various quantity takeoff tools found in AutoCAD Civil 3D software and export both AutoCAD software and AutoCAD Civil 3D object data to formats that you can use for estimating. To complete the class we will introduce a new cloud-based cost-estimating system called AEC Tender. Using AEC Tender, we can connect to data extracted from our detailed design and generate detailed cost estimates for both scenarios within minutes using past project construction unit costs.
