What if we—Autodesk, Inc.—would use our own technologies for our own needs? In this class we will show you how we applied interesting workflows involving the following software: ReCap software, Revit software, BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Layout software, and Point Layout to retrofit the Autodesk Paris office. After having generated a 3D model in Revit software based on point clouds reflecting existing conditions that we got from 3D scans, we made a retrofit proposal and used BIM 360 Layout software to stake out data into the field with a robotic total station. This class will be delivered by Topcon Corporation and a European BIM 360 software customer and will show the impact of using Point Layout software and BIM 360 tools combined with Topcon's LN-100 Layout Navigator to achieve improved efficiencies for integrated construction layout and as-built validation. The project was defined as part of the Topcon/Autodesk, Inc., BIM Implementation program, and will demonstrate new workflows using Revit software, Navisworks software, and Point Layout software, and subsequent use of BIM 360 Layout software on a connected iPad. We will focus on business benefits and return on investment achieved using these new inventive processes.

Why model as-built conditions when you can work directly with a high-resolution point cloud? In this very hands-on class we will stake out the foundations for a new addition to our Autodesk University (AU) classroom using a remarkably easy, cloud-enabled workflow. First, participants will import a point cloud of our AU classroom into Navisworks Manage software. We will then use Point Layout software to place points on a number of modeled objects that we intend to stake out as part of a small classroom renovation. The model will be shared with the field using BIM 360 Glue cloud service. Finally, we will connect the BIM 360 Layout iPad application to a robotic total station to enable field users to stake out and verify the exact position of the points. All of this will happen using a contextual model of our surroundings.

This class will be delivered by Hill Construction, a U.K.-based housebuilder, supported by Topcon Corporation and Autodesk, Inc. Hill Construction will describe its Building Information Modeling (BIM) journey so far, and how the firm has applied BIM 360 tools into its workflows on a complex construction project undertaken by Hill Bespoke in Cambridge, England. The class will cover how using a variety of mass-data capture techniques to gather as-built documentation combined with integrated on-site verification and management has improved efficiencies and reduced errors using innovative new workflows. Hill will describe the impact of these new workflows incorporating software (including BIM 360 Field cloud service, BIM 360 Layout cloud service, BIM 360 Glue cloud service, and BIM 360 Docs cloud service) integrated with Topcon mass-data capture and layout solutions, and the efficiencies gained over traditional methods. As a general contractor, quality control of building layout and verification is necessary to minimize the risk of rework and additional costs or schedule delays. When establishing site control to implement the use of total stations, the team will need to work through a number of challenges and prerequisites. General contractors will need to understand the risk of taking or not taking this responsibility or transferring the risk to third-party quality assurance / quality control teams. Buy-in from the project team and enforcing trades to work on the same controls across a site is important to consistency in layout and verifications. This class will highlight all the prerequisites and challenges that general contractors might typically face when implementing this process, and we’ll document a generic workflow for efficient implementation and best practices. CIM and BIM have been buzz-words in the industry for quite some time, and have slowly made their own paths with disparate technology and corresponding workflows. Autodesk has been behind the curtain slowly transforming these buzz words into reality. Today, we can integrate the two populous terms into a single common data environment. Not only can we aggregate this data, but we can utilize it and the information that builds on it downstream. In this course, we will be demonstrating the ease of use of merging field captured data and engineering data with our design files in the BIM 360 environment. We will utilize this data for positioning, design, and even layout. We will then show the benefits leveraged downstream such as QA/QC and layout by way of a field controller or BIM 360 itself. The outcomes are revolutionary as we can connect remote teams by the cloud, with the most up to date information. We can track all activities, versioning, and even communication.

BIM 360 Insight software offers a new way to review project performance. Those activities and interactions happen within the BIM 360 account and would be recorded, calculated, and summarized accurately and shown in the BIM 360 Insight module. To extend the benefits of data management in the same cloud base, we can import and link an external data source to BIM 360 software. Microsoft Power BI is the important media to connect the extra statistics and link with BIM 360. We will introduce more possible data analysis tools such as Google Colab and Python.

Learn how to best adopt Autodesk's Point Layout plug-in for Revit software, AutoCAD software, and BIM 360 software. Hear about a general contractor's lessons learned from using the software and difficulties that arise out in the field-from working with civil engineer's files to working with several different robotic total stations on one site. Attendees will learn how to create a proper workflow using naming and numbering standards set forth by the field, and how to ensure a streamlined approach for importing and exporting points to their robotic total stations. We'll explore how to work with real-world coordinates as well as create our own, and we'll look at the best way to track the coordinate system across a project's lifecycle. The Meisi Lake City Island is the world’s largest twin-helix steel structure. It is very difficult to install elements onto the site precisely with traditional methods. Working with BIM 360 Glue software and Point Layout software, users can generate the set points from Building Information Modeling (BIM) models directly, laying out the data with the total station automatically. The class will show the best practice to set the points to space elements, and run the site survey with a standards procedure. We’ll also show how to get the site position with a total station, and compare the installation results with original BIM model for quality audit. The economic and social value is to eliminate deviation of manual centering, and improve mapping precision; decrease quantity of surveyors with automatic robot, improve mapping efficiency, and shorten working period; and reduce surveying works at high altitudes, and thereby improve safety management. Do you know where your components are during the construction phase of your project? Will your components be delivered late to the site, posing a risk of late delivery? What do you do if a component has an issue when delivered to the site? Excitech have been working with MACE Group (main contractor) to develop a workflow so the building materials can be tracked during the fabrication, manufacturing, delivery, installation, and commission process. Using Revit design elements, a workflow has been established that firstly goes through BIM 360 Glue software so the coordination and layout of the element can be verified during the preconstruction process. Then the information is linked into BIM 360 Field software where the manufacturing elements can be tracked from procurement through to commissioning. The data can finally round-trip through to the Navisworks platform for a visual representation of the component status.

Survey data is an important part of every infrastructure project. From field collection and remote sensing to establish the project’s existing-conditions base plan, all the way through to settings out of the designed features and the automated grading of the finished surfaces. In this class, we will take a deep dive into the new and existing survey features and functionality in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 software. We will cover traditional, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), scanned, photographed, and remote-sensing data types, and we’ll see how they’re added and used in both AutoCAD Civil 3D software and InfraWorks 360 software. Then we will dive deeper into open and closed loop adjustments, “on the fly” local to assumed coordinate-system transformations, grid-to-ground considerations, extreme description key coding, extended data on points and figures, and Land XML-based survey systems. And finally, to keep up with the latest trends, we will explore the power of photo-to-point-cloud tools, and see how settings out information works in the BIM 360 mobile applications. This session will present the new DeWalt Corporation Hanger Design plug-in for Revit software, which automates the placement and design of hangers and trapeze assemblies for common MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems, such as pipe, duct, conduit, and cable trays. The placement of these assemblies has historically been based on “rule of thumb” sizing and spacing and/or prescriptive rules from various trade-specific handbooks that do not necessarily comply with current building-code requirements or structural point-load limitations. Modeling MEP systems in Revit software offers many advantages for coordination, prefabrication, consolidation of parallel runs, and placement of cast-in-place hanger inserts. This new tool analyzes these systems, and automatically places hanger/trapeze assemblies, anchors, and seismic bracing per building-code requirements with engineering calculation reports automatically generated. This class will focus on one of the major issues that the Building Information Modeling (BIM) / virtual design and construction industry faces today: the use of the 3D models in the field. Attendees will learn the process of how to create a field-ready model that would give them the ability to extract information directly from the model to be used in the field, contrary to a designer’s model, whose information if tailored to the production of construction documents drawings. In addition, the class will cover how to use software like Point Layout software to pre-program points, along with introductions to instruments like the TopCon PS Series and the BIM 360 Layout app. We will show examples of use from the All Aboard Florida project, located in Miami, Florida, showing point layouts with embeds, sleeves, and column layouts that have provided accurate layout information, as-built information, and QA/AC to the field to maintain a high-quality of work.
