Early BIM workflows rarely included actual building product data and families. As our technology grows and matures it is becoming more important to move from the “Building Models” (BM) that we started with and add more and more “I” so that we take full advantage of “Building Information Modeling” (BIM). Who better to provide this information than the companies that actually manufacture the products we use in our design. Building Product Manufactures (BPM’s) were mostly left out of the BIM party during the early stages of our transition from 2D to BIM, but now they are slowly being incorporated into our models. So the question is how we best welcome them into our party to benefit the entire design build team. This class will discuss strategies, topics, and tools that help the entire design build team to realize the true power of virtual design.

For today's architects to meet their ambitious sustainability goals toward net zero, new building materials that can sequester carbon emissions and replace petroleum-based products must rapidly enter the construction industry. In this session, we'll look at a case study where leaders in industrialized construction, composite manufacturing, and biomaterials technology joined Autodesk researchers. Together, they developed a carbon sequestering facade system by replacing the typical petroleum-based foam within fiberglass reinforced facade panels with mycelium fungi composites, a carbon-negative biomaterial. The session will describe the developmental journey from material research and performance validation to the use of Autodesk Forma and Autodesk Fusion 360 software to design the facade for a Californian housing development that meets sustainability, habitability, and construction project goals. General contractors, like Bouygues Construction, face new challenges: skilled workforce shortages and a need for sustainability engagement (carbon footprint reduction) and high quality. Compared to the manufacturing industry, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has been struggling to improve productivity for years. To tackle these challenges, we need to transform our ways of working by going beyond building information modeling (BIM)-expected outcomes. Our dedicated team SmartFabrik embeds engineering methodology as a new approach to construction in functional bricks. These bricks maximize knowledge and know-how management (from all actors at all steps). Through this new modularity, we can produce deliverables that meet the jobsite's actual needs and requirements. This process is a foundation of Building 4.0, moving from multitrade on-site activities to modules and tasks' assembly. The as-built model is the starting point for the future digital twin. During this class we'll illustrate the approach with the MEP Riser module using Manufacturing Informed Design software.

The uprising of the maker movement has seen many people gaining access to an array of machinery and technology on a scale never before seen and opening many doors that were previously locked solid, encouraging many ideas to become reality that have previously been unachievable. Micromanufacturing is the transformation of dreams and ideas into reality through the use of low-cost, minimalistic production technology and equipment in home-style businesses across the globe. In this class, we’ll cover the evolution of micromanufacturing, the ability it has to transform small ideas into viable products for a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacture, and some real-world applications for micromanufacturing in an innovative, small-scale production environment.

Detailed indoor maps can significantly improve building management and operations while delivering amazing user experiences inside buildings and facilities. With the Apple Indoor Maps Program, Apple makes it easy for organizations to easily add indoor maps to apps and websites and enable indoor positioning, all without the need to install beacons. This session will go into detail about the Indoor Program and how Autodesk’s building operations product, BIM 360 Ops, integrates with it.

This course will present inventive techniques and methods, using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the review of the building envelope. A key focus of the presentation will be the highlighting of how structural systems interact with the enclosure system. It will focus on topics such as the Level of Development (LOD) of architectural models and structural design models and how these progress into fabrication-level models for the building envelope in products such as Inventor software and Revit Architecture software with the structural system, interacting with products such as Revit Structure software and Advance Steel software. Key areas of this will be looking at localized high-level-of-development models around transitions of buildings, and will show how systems are brought together and used in a building-enclosure review meeting, as well as the importance of integrating both structure and building envelope as holistic systems as part of the review process.

The future of designing and making buildings is at a tipping point, and a significant paradigm shift is not far away. Net zero is acting as the catalyst for radical change, and change—enabled by the shift toward off-site manufacturing and the availability of a raft of digital technologies and tools—is happening rapidly. This talk will look at the work of WSP's digital innovation team, and consider how to adopt designing for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) approaches where economies of scale align with configurators to drive product-orientated workflows and new customer experiences. Within this workflow, kits of parts and catalogues become crucial to the success of repeatable content, while enabling individual projects to create their own identities within circular economy approaches where longevity and replacement of larger subassemblies become commonplace. The case studies we present will underline all of these aspects.

To meet global demand for affordable and sustainable housing, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry must streamline the design-to-construction process. Modular builders—like Factory_OS—are doing just that by productizing their building systems to generate customizable buildings from a catalog of construction-ready unit types. With Factory_OS, Autodesk Research has developed new design methods that connect their building unit catalog with AI-powered generative design to create multiple design options. This case study demonstrates how new procedural design systems enabled rapid, no-code design exploration while balancing trade-offs between cost, carbon, and habitability. The study also showcases how the prototype made it onto Autodesk Forma using the developer extension model to deliver customized novel design functionality and metrics. Going beyond existing capabilities, Autodesk Research and Autodesk Forma enabled Factory_OS to rapidly and intuitively evaluate new development projects in a data-informed manner.

This class will focus on how manufacturers are becoming an integral part of the architecture and construction digital pipeline. It will cover not only how building product fabricators can deliver reusable information to architects, but also how custom fabricators and system integrators can deliver coordinated models into an ongoing project.

Buildings use over 40% of all energy on the planet. Of existing buildings, 99% are small commercial and residential buildings that use 80% of all energy in buildings. Each building in this group is generally too small to be of interest to the traditional professional who uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) or conducts sophisticated energy analysis. So, how are we going to solve this problem? We mash up the latest in mobile hardware, cloud services, augmented reality, and reality capture technologies to produce a solution that enables anyone who is able to play Angry Birds on an Apple® iPad® to analyze a small building in a fun and accurate way.

The process starts with PDF files of guitar designs, which are imported into AutoCAD. These are correctly scaled and once the shape of the guitar body is finalised, the new shape is imported into Inventor. The new shape is overlayed onto an AnyCAD model in Inventor and then modified to suit the new design. The electro components are positioned into the guitar body and virtually wired. Some drawing verification is done to ensure that everything is the right size, as the guitar needs to sound right, then renderings are done in Inventor. A nesting study is then run to optimise material usage for a future production run. A CNC study will also be created for future manufacturing runs. The prototype will be built with hand tools. Next I show how to create templates for building the guitar body in AutoCAD. In this instance, 1:1 layouts are printed out and then used to cut solid oak to size. Additional templates for the pockets are also created.
