Learn to use Civil 3D pipe networks, parcels, and catchment objects to greatly improve H&H productivity and drainage map plan production. The presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of effective practices regarding how to combine foundation designs in Revit Structure Suite software with civil-site designers in AutoCAD Civil 3D software to ultimately collaborate with architects in Revit Architecture software. The discussion will give guidelines on where utility modeling for building should transition from Revit MEP software above grade to AutoCAD Civil 3D software below grade and how to use Navisworks project review software in this review process. Key concept to review will be the difference between local coordinate systems that building designers work in as compared to the state plane coordinate system that civil engineers typically use. The discussion will then consider the new American Institute of Architects' BIM Protocol Exhibit E202 that defines the Level Of Detail (LOD) in models on a scale of 100 to 500. The presenter will demonstrate these LOD concepts with case studies from projects in 3 different project phases: design, construction, and facilities management.

Learn how to reduce time and improve the quality of surface models in Civil 3D software using geographic information system (GIS) data. The Autodesk and Esri partnership has spurred advances in surface modeling that fuel collaboration between civil engineers and GIS professionals. Newly developed tools simplify the processing of triangular irregular network (TIN) surfaces originating from Civil 3D and formation of complementary terrain data sets within ArcGIS Pro. Surface model data propagated into ArcGIS web feature layers then establishes both a system of record and an avenue for two-way synchronization extending into Civil 3D. In this class, we'll walk through key steps of surface modeling workflows and show how the new tools facilitate ground assessments and visualization in multiple environments. Civil engineers and GIS professionals will come away from this class better equipped to jointly participate in design workflows for existing and proposed ground.

We’ll also consider what sort of project may be best served by using both software platforms, and we’ll cover the challenges and some suggestions of best practices involved in executing such a project. Join us as we share what we’ve learned while navigating this intersection of these two platforms.

In this class, we’ll demonstrate how to use automation for transportation, land development, and pipe networks workflows in Civil 3D software through Dynamo and Python. The class will introduce Dynamo for Civil 3D capabilities, focusing on the implementation of computational design for infrastructures. We will cover how to expand the possible workflows through Python scripting to use the AutoCAD and Civil 3D APIs.

AutoCAD Civil 3D software gives civil engineers some great tools out of the box to perform hydraulics and hydrology studies; but if you dig a little deeper, you can truly bring out the "I" in Building Information Modeling (BIM) for civil engineers. This is a lab session in which we will utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D software parcels for an integrated solution for watershed area delineation, hydrologic analysis calculations, and drainage map production. We will work in a highly customized hydrology workflows template that includes parcel object and label styles setup, specifically to produce drainage maps with dynamic hydrology calculations updating as the watersheds are edited. We will finish by exporting our drainage map out for more complex analyses in Storm and Sanitary Analysis (SSA).

Can you handle the pressure of inventing for civil? This is a down-and-dirty course in Inventor software and Inventor LT software for civil engineers, civil designers, and civil CAD managers. We'll cover the skills needed in Inventor software to create parts and assemblies specifically for infrastructure projects. We'll then add those parts to Parts Editor and export them to gravity or pressure networks in both AutoCAD Civil 3D software and InfraWorks software. During the class, we'll design a curb inlet in 3 parts, import it into Parts Editor, and place it into an assembly. From the assemblies and families in Parts Editor, we'll create an AutoCAD Civil 3D Parts catalog. Lastly, we'll import the new catalog into AutoCAD Civil 3D and apply the new part to a storm drainage system. As a bonus, we'll repeat all these steps and show you how to import the new part into InfraWorks and apply it to a storm drainage system there. If the gravity of your infrastructure designs is serious enough that you need to reinvent parts, this class is for you!

In this session, we’ll explore Entwine Point Tiles (40+ trillion points), and how to consume them in mere minutes inside of Civil 3D software as a surface (via point cloud). As large point cloud data sets become ubiquitous in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community, open-source libraries and software dedicated to manipulating these data sets are valuable tools for civil engineers and those in the geospatial community. Entwine is a free online cloud repository that anyone can access, and with this technical instruction, you can go from zero (knowledge) to office hero in minutes!

If you took part 1 of this class (today or a previous year at AU) and are ready to learn even more, this class takes the next step as we look at the GIS capability in Civil 3D and how it can benefit Civil Engineers and Surveyors.  GIS data can be created directly in Civil 3D or imported from other programs. Now that you have access to that data the real fun begins.  This class will explore ways to analyze, display and leverage this information to answer questions and automate common tasks.  The request to provide design data to GIS departments is becoming more common every day. This class will explore the details of why just sending them a drawing is often not an adequate way to satisfy that request.  You will learn ways to export Civil 3D objects to GIS formats that can be used easily and consistently by your GIS department.

The lab will provide a hands-on approach of best practices for how to combine civil site designs in AutoCAD Civil 3D software with foundation designs in Revit software to ultimately collaborate with architects.
