It is well known that construction is wasteful and inefficient. It is the world’s largest consumer of raw materials, using around 50% of global steel production. It is one of the largest sectors in the world economy, with around $10 trillion being spent on construction-related goods and services annually. However, the industry’s productivity has flat-lined over the past 50 years whilst other manufacturing industries have almost doubled. This is not surprising given that there has been little to no development in on-site construction tools. It is, though, unfair to say there has been no technological advancement: within the design and planning stages, the software has taken great strides, with BIM, in particular, playing an important role. This brings us to the root of the problem, which is that whilst we are designing digitally, we are still constructing manually. At Scaled Robotics we believe this disconnect between the digital model and the physical world is what leads to many of the inefficiencies that plague the industry. A basic example of that disconnection is that currently, site managers have no quick and accurate tool to compare the built structure to the digital model. They rely either on manual spot checks–which are slow, labour-intensive, and not fully representative–or expensive laser scanners, which though more accurate are extremely slow. They also only produce raw data and not actionable information for site management. At Scaled Robotics we believe that the development of new construction tools such as robotics will be at the forefront of solving these industry problems. Through this workshop, we will explore a holistic road map for moving from no robots in construction to fully automated construction sites with totally new manufacturing processes, focusing on both technological milestones and industry requirements to make this a reality. Referencing current state of the art research, solutions being deployed today by Scaled Robotics on construction sites around Europe and how that connects to Forge and the larger AEC software ecosystem. The workshop will be given from the perspective of Stuart Maggs, CEO and Co-Founder of Scaled Robotics, a construction robotics startup developing and deploying robots on real construction sites today. Lifting the lid on the technological and industry challenges by recounting the nitty-gritty trials and tribulations faced trying to build these new tools.

Project management for construction can be very challenging. It involves intensive coordination among teams and stakeholders throughout all project phases, from design review to project delivery. Efficient management of construction documents, such as drawings, designs, issues, RFIs, change orders, etc., is the key for project success. Research has shown that more than 50% of RFIs have a root cause in design issues and documentation error that could be solved by improving design review. In this session, we look at how a data driven approach can help project teams including VDC managers, project engineers, superintendents and project managers stay on top of critical high risk items and take action. We explore how technologies such as Construction IQ can leverage knowledge and past experience gained through mining tons of data and apply that to prioritize issues and RFIs, and group them into actionable categories for faster and more focused processing, with the ultimate goal of mitigating project risks and bettering project performance. This session is a follow-up of the class presented last year about the “Virtual construction site management with advanced workflow in BIM360” (CS468465). We will describe the improvements made this year through the adoption of the Build module including the PlanGrid Build mobile app for field workers. We’ve been widely extending the use of Construction Cloud with digitalization of other construction processes in addition of those already implemented. We are focusing our attention on setting up a workflow for safety and environmental check in the work site.Using Forge and Construction Cloud Connect, we are developing integration with other company database and Legacy IT systems, to avoid data redundancy and to build up integrated dashboards. In upcoming years we will be able to manage and improve the construction process of linear infrastructure projects with ConstructionCloud in order to improve data quality, reduce costs and time by 60%, reduce wastefulness and promote sustainability

There's a perfect storm of technology change driving the construction revolution today. Mobile devices, Internet of Things, sensors, and drones are continuously capturing construction job-site data and the cloud is aggregating this data. Machine-learning applications such as BIM 360 IQ software help construction project teams analyze risk from this data in real time and take corrective actions. Layton Construction and Autodesk have been collaborating and working together for the past year to apply the BIM 360 IQ machine-learning system for construction safety. In this session, Cooper Darling-an assistant project manager from Layton Construction-will be sharing his project manager experiences involved in helping identify and reduce safety risks on a construction job site with the aid of assistive technologies such as machine learning. Cooper is also part of Layton's National Safety Leadership Team, and he's helping champion the processes and standards based on BIM 360 software for Layton.

Automation and robotics have helped manufacturing, retail, and agriculture industries increase productivity by 1,500% since 1945 (McKinsey 2017). Construction has a labor problem, a skills gap, an image issue, and diversity issues. The adoption of technology in construction presents new opportunities to reinvent our image, and our presence, into one that is much less caveman-esque: One that embraces diversity and technology and values its people. This tech adoption also presents us with new challenges as we navigate how to do this without alienating our current workforce who holds much of the knowledge about how we build. The industry cannot afford to push past the existing workforce, nor can it afford to give in and let the industry operate at status quo. Construction needs to adopt new paradigms that encourage the buy-in and support of the current workforce while attracting new talent from labor pools that are traditionally not attracted to the industry, including women and young workers who are just entering the workforce. There are issues in the industry that need to be explored and addressed in order to achieve these goals.

Construction Cloud is today being used across a large range of projects globally. This session will demonstrate a number of use cases, including how PlanGrid is helping build and maintain railways, Assemble is being used to quantify materials in dams, BuildingConnected is being used to source subcontractors for road projects, and BIM 360 software is being used to manage complex infrastructure projects.
