Designing parts for the injection molding process often relies on experience and generic guidelines. Determining the needed geometry for design features can be very time consuming. In this session, we’ll look at how we can streamline this process using Autodesk Fusion 360 software and its extensions. Autodesk Fusion 360 Product Design Extension includes tools for the quick addition of common features, such as snaps and bosses, to Autodesk Fusion 360 parts. Will these features work? Will the snap fail during initial assembly? Will there be sink marks if a boss is molded as designed? Autodesk Fusion 360 Simulation Extension tools for stress analysis and mold-filling simulation help answer these key questions. Now we can catch and correct potential issues early in the design cycle, when there’s still time to react and costs of changes are relatively low.

This session will cover the updates made to the Simulation Workspace in Autodesk Fusion 360 over the past few years. This industrial case study will cover a recent design-and-make collaboration between Autodesk and Impression Technologies (ITL), an industry-leading, automotive, hot-forming solutions provider. Together we’ll present a comparison of several mold designs across a range of design approaches and manufacturing technologies. We’ll demonstrate how optimizing design for additive manufacturing can be maximized to achieve more-efficient production times and material usage, improved part quality, and reduced part cost and energy consumption. During the project, experts from Autodesk and ITL collaborated via Autodesk CFD software and the Autodesk Fusion 360 platform. We used simulation and several design methodologies, including conformal cooling and the application of lattice structures via the Autodesk Fusion 360 Product Design extension. The project culminated in the tooling production using Autodesk’s Birmingham Technology Centre metal additive manufacturing systems, and testing and validation at ITL’s research facility.

Many manufacturing companies have design engineering teams that are already "digitally mature." However, this is just a small part of the business when we consider every other function in the process of manufacturing parts. Consider that 70% of projects are still over budget or late, and up to 40% of engineering time is spent looking for the right files or information. This class will look at how customers are using tools—such as FlexSim, Autodesk Fusion Manage Extension, and Autodesk Fusion Operations—connected together to break down silos between departments, have change control over manufacturing BOMs and process definitions, and predict production issues before they arise. We will show how accurate simulation models based on real-world data can ensure projects remain on time and budget. And we’ll show how a connected data platform and change management platform can ensure data is well connected, reducing the time spent finding the right data.

Autodesk Fusion software is one of the most powerful design and engineering tools available on the market. It allows industrial designers and mechanical engineers to design, analyze, and manufacture their ideas. Thankfully, there are plenty of learning resources to help people new to CAD—or just new to Fusion. However, it can be difficult to find more advanced content that shows how to get from an intermediate level all the way to an expert level—how to design and engineer the best products possible and do so more quickly and easily. In this technical session, you'll learn the most effective techniques to take your product design and engineering skills to the next level and beyond. If you're interested in becoming a Fusion design and engineering expert, this class is for you!

During Autodesk University 2021, we shared a developed workflow for how designers can bring data together through designing the part, the PCB (printed circuit board), and even how to manufacture the plastic components. With the complexity of electronic part designs, there are often various aspects that we need to consider in order for the part to both work and perform as expected. In this class, we’ll demonstrate how the Autodesk Fusion 360 workflow has matured to incorporate mechanical engineering aspects to smooth this product design workflow. We’ll use a sample product, the Autodesk University Digital Badge, to demo how to integrate mechanical design requirements and simulation into the product design process.

You can see plastic injection-molded parts everywhere. From the consumer products and children's toys in our homes all the way through to the interiors of the cars we drive. With the addition of injection-molding simulation tools and Product Design Extension in Autodesk Fusion 360, there’s the opportunity to take the design of injection-molded components all the way from concept through to design, manufacturing validation and tooling manufacture all without ever leaving Autodesk Fusion 360. So that's what we'll do! We'll follow the whole process from start to finish. We'll look at designing a part, designing the mold, validating the mold, cutting chips on a computer numerical control (CNC) machine to make the mold, and producing the part.

Victoria Hand Project (VHP) is a charity that designs and deploys low-cost, 3D-printed prosthetic arms in developing countries. VHP provides medical professionals in low-income countries with the tools and training to create custom prosthetic arms. VHP has developed software solutions which use Autodesk Fusion 360 software to efficiently create these devices. Recently, VHP struggled to create prosthetic devices for upper-arm amputees (i.e., above elbow), due to the complex geometry of the 3D scans and the in-depth knowledge/workflow required to make the devices. Through the new Autodesk Fusion 360 Product Design Extension, VHP can now organically convert the complex mesh bodies of upper-arm scans into solid bodies for further 3D modeling. This has substantially improved the workflow of creating upper-arm prosthetic sockets, and allows for automation using APIs. This empowers VHP’s in-country partners to create custom upper-arm prosthetic devices quickly and easily, allowing for improved access to prosthetic care.

Project MOnACO (Manufacturing Of a large-scale AM Component) is a $1.1 million research collaboration with GE Aviation et al. funded by the Clean Sky 2 program. The focus is to cut noise and emissions from the civil aerospace market using disruptive technologies. The aim is to converge design and manufacturing using the A.T.L.A.S. machine that’s currently the largest metal powder additive manufacturing of its kind (build size >1m). Autodesk is leading the design of the turbine center frame assembly using multiphysics Generative Design in Autodesk Fusion 360, the new product design extension for lattices and manufacturing simulation (Netfabb et al.) workflows geared toward large-scale additive manufacturing. The latest design is 34% lighter than its predecessor, and the components have been consolidated from 150 parts to a single part. In this talk, we’ll discuss how we applied Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) workflows using Autodesk design and make tools to solve tomorrow's problems.

Before attending this class, we recommend visiting and participating in the Autodesk Factory Experience on the exhibition floor. Prototyping while developing a new product design is critical to ensure delivery of higher-quality parts to market. This step in the product design cycle is, however, typically time-consuming and costly through iterating and purchasing/making individual parts. This is why many product designers have already turned primarily to digital prototyping rather than physical prototyping, so they can ensure on-time product delivery that doesn't break the bank. This class will focus on how you can utilize Fusion 360 and its extensions for digital prototyping, focusing on an Autodesk Factory assembly product. Consumer electronics is a fast-moving segment, where time and collaboration is critical to be ahead of the competition. We'll demonstrate how to effectively experiment with product design alternatives, collaborate with key project stakeholders, test layouts for PCB, simulate structural and manufacturing aspects, and render final product previews, all within Fusion 360.

Come to this class to learn how you can use an engineering-based generative design tool for concept development. Autodesk Fusion 360 is consistently growing in popularity as a hard modeler for production/concept design. The combination of generative design and exploration of the form tool (T-spline modeling) can yield diverse results. In addition, generative design can produce a wide range of models with different manufacturing and material properties. Each result can be adjusted for density and then modified with the form tool and/or solid/surface modification. As a bonus, there are mesh tolls for added modification and combination with additional data sources.

Want to learn how to use generative capabilities to design and optimize fluid flow with lower pressure drop and smoother channels—10-100 times faster? This class will present the Fluid Path study in the Generative Design Extension in Fusion 360 ("Generative Fluids” for short), a powerful generative technology for the CFD industry, explain how to apply it, and share advanced tips and tricks to significantly speed up the design process. You'll learn the Generative Fluids workflow, the physics and optimization behind it, and important aspects involved in getting as much as possible from the tool. Additionally, we'll cover how to connect the workflow with other Autodesk capabilities and products, such as Generative Design in Fusion 360 (to combine both generative technologies, structural and fluids); Autodesk CFD for result validation; and Fusion Electronics Cooling in Fusion 360. This session is a chance to ask direct questions to the people creating the product.

In this talk, we’ll explore the application of hybrid manufacturing to injection mold tools for both modification and repair, demonstrating a circular economy where tools can be modular, reusable, and rapidly modified. Hybrid manufacturing uses machine tools that combine additive and subtractive operations, and provide particular value to the modification and life extension of mold tools. We'll demonstrate a workflow using Autodesk software to (a) identify unwanted features or damage on a mold, (b) capture physical geometric data, (c) program processes to remove and repair features and damage, (d) redeposit material, and (e) machine new features. We'll demonstrate both the digital and physical aspects of the workflow, and aim to present the final physical output—a brand-new injection-molded component, made in the Autodesk Moldflow Laboratory in Kilsyth, Australia. This project is a collaboration between the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Autodesk.
