How can we think about the needs of the people we’re designing for in a way that helps us avoid engineering pitfalls? What makes human-centered design an effective strategy versus an over-hyped trend? Where has a human-centered approach worked well, and where has it failed? A panel of product design experts will address these questions and more to uncover new ways to tackle difficult engineering challenges with the end-user in mind.

Buzzwords like sustainability and collaboration get thrown around excessively in the building industry. This class will be discussing holistic-atruistic design representing the balance between sustainability, cost, and function. In addition to building trends, we will focus on analytics, communication and documentation tools, and deliverables impacting the entire lifecycle of a project. The class will focus on new technologies informing design, analyzing patterns of use and leveraging technology to automate controls and optimize building operation. Holistic-altruistic building practices can be achieved by leveraging human-centered design theories. We will explore this topic in addition to case studies of existing firms that are able to implement these theories into practice.

Computing power is increasing exponentially, however, structural engineers are only starting to realize its power for design automation. This talk will focus on how this can be used to provide optioneering in early project stages, and investigate a computational scheme design tool. The talk will deconstruct the tool and its logic to demonstrate the integration between the various Autodesk packages and how this is formed into a cohesive product to provide valuable information for design teams. The tool provides metrics such as material cost, embodied C02, and program implications, while utilizing the Atkins Human-Centered Design toolkit to ensure a holistic appreciation of project requirements. The talk will feature exemplar uses of the tool on pilot projects and will quantify the increased value achievable over conventional design approaches. We will then discuss future improvements to the tool and how computational design could be used in other ways to improve structural design.

Sanergy implements a pit sludge management service to capture harmful pit waste that would otherwise be dumped in the open environment. With AutoCAD software’s automation and digital capabilities—such as the Trace tool, Count tool, DesignCenter library, tool palettes, and the AutoCAD web app—the team has been able to accurately design and build user-centered pit waste containment centers in Nairobi’s informal settlements where manual pit emptiers (MPEs) can safely empty their waste and clean their equipment. This session will cover Sanergy’s approach to generating valuable design insights based on feedback received from site users (MPEs), and how AutoCAD automation and digital tools have been key to this initiative. The talk will also walk you through the benefits gained by embracing AutoCAD software’s automation and digital tools, and the opportunities they present to the construction industry.

We’ll give participants a project brief, and select teams at random. In this workshop for product designers, we’ll have you thinking, drawing, and modeling in real-time to understand how Fusion 360 and other design tools can be used to build rapport and prototypes with people from all walks of life. Facilitated by Catapult Design, who helps clients around the world to research, imagine, prototype and develop creative solutions to pressing problems for their customers, you’ll learn how to increase opportunities for 'hands on/mind on' design inputs.

The class will be a lecture on the EQ house, the actually built architecture that AI and IoT deployed. It was completed in March of 2019. Installed with advanced IoT technology and AI, EQ House is expected to be attached by the owner as if it were life-like architecture. It is installed with varied sensors to perceive environmental status and accumulates data about the owner’s preference by means of “like” buttons from the smart watch. The experimental design, inspection, and fabrication process was also needed to actually realize the futuristic architecture of the EQ House. By using the optimization process, the design period to determine the pattern of the facade decreased by 60% and through the inspection using BIM 360 Docs software and mixed reality decreased 20%, and the fabrication by 25%.

This presentation will discuss the ways in which the construction of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (http://www.cchrpartnership.org/) in Atlanta, Georgia, employed Building Information Modeling (BIM). Due to the fast pace of the project and the complex nature of the design, BIM played a crucial role in coordinating work, driving quality, and keeping the project on schedule. This presentation will address the many ways that project participants used Autodesk, Inc., tools—primarily Revit software and Navisworks project review software—during the project to solve problems beyond coordination between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) and fire protection (FP). We will include examples of how Revit users can solve geometrically complex problems that are normally left for Rhino software users to tackle, and how you can lay those solutions out in the field.

This class will explore Fusion 360 software as the common language in a unique project between interior and industrial design students, their faculty, and a high-production manufacturer. The presentation will illustrate how Fusion 360 was used to translate design ideas to manufacture a high-quality prototype, and serve as an educational tool for students and professionals, while improving workflow and project outcomes. The prototype, Mobile Kitchen, or MO:KI, is a bespoke collection of modular, mobile units that push the boundaries of the cooking experience and the traditional work triangle for an improved user experience. The concept affords flexibility in organizing an environment responsive to the tactile needs of a chef. We will discuss current research and design in anticipation of commercialization, using Fusion 360. This talk will highlight not only the process of design and production, but also the ongoing collaboration between education, manufacturing, and Autodesk as a pathway for future learning and making.

Looking at advanced display technologies and the growing possibilities for human-machine interaction, Porsche wants to ensure a driver-centered and fully interactive product experience. Therefore, it is more important than ever to enable both designers and board members as well to get a highly realistic and fully immersive experience of their products in the early stages of the design process. Not only to integrate advanced technologies like augmented reality (AR) seamlessly into the design concept, but also to be able to explore which technologies can enhance the driver experience in which way. This class will give you an inside view into how Porsche is using VRED software to collaborate with other departments and provide new possibilities for UX/user-interface experiences in the early design process.
