Additive manufacturing (AM) is bringing new innovations to traditional methods of manufacturing. AM is now being used to manufacture composite tooling, saving composite manufacturers cost and lead time over traditional tooling methods and materials. Composite tooling is typically an expensive process, due to the materials required to survive the various manufacturing processes involved. Tooling is exposed to excessive temperatures, pressures, and forces, causing tools to be unusable after a period of time. Manufacturing problems like warpage can render an expensive tool useless. This course will inform composite manufacturers about which AM methods, materials, and optimization techniques can be used to substitute traditional tooling. It will also cover the various composite manufacturing methods that can take advantage of additive tooling, and how to verify that the tooling will be appropriate for the design manufacturing process.

Estimating and understanding costs is paramount to the success of any project. This course will show how to use Process Analysis 360 software to model your manufacturing processes, test various options, and generate associated costs for capital equipment, energy, labor, consumables, and waste.

A typical manufacturing company is very digitally mature in the design office. However, that maturity reduces as we move down toward production. The manufacturing process can easily become costly and inefficient due to the use of software or paper-based methods that do not fit the goals of collaboration, traceability, accountability, reporting, and so on. As a result of this, customers can lose a lot of time finding the correct data at the correct time, ensuring that the correct versions of files are in use, understanding what past decisions were made and why, reworking parts to correct mistakes, and reworking scrapped parts. This talk will look at how customers can use Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage Extension and Prodsmart together with Vault software in order to create a digitally connected platform for process and data management as well as the scheduling of jobs and resources on the shop floor. We will also look at how this then enables better change control processes around the process configuration.

New manufacturing processes and hardware are changing the way products are designed and made. This class will focus on how companies can use innovative DED (directed energy deposition) additive processes in their businesses to respond faster, produce more efficiently, and produce parts they couldn't have through traditional manufacturing techniques. We'll be focusing primarily on PowerMill 2019 software's support for additive/hybrid manufacturing processes, and the Diversified Machine Systems (DMS) Hybrid Machining Center that combines 5-axis additive and 5-axis subtractive machining. You'll learn which industries have lead the way in adopting these technologies and how they've implemented them, which applications in your shop could benefit from DED hybrid technology, how to most effectively plan for hybrid processes, and how to best utilize the new Additive tools in PowerMill.

Design advancements are exciting and offer solutions previously unthought-of to complex problems. But we can’t forget the manufacturing processes needed to fabricate and eventually implement that new and optimized design. This class will focus on the emerging Generative Design technology in Fusion 360, and multiple ways to manufacture those designs, capitalizing on additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and a combination of both. The goal will be to explore design and manufacturing workflows to bring this emerging technology into the fold for potential users with varying levels of manufacturing capability. This class will address the workflow from initial generation to final part, focusing on the best practices found along the way.

Advanced composite materials are replacing more and more metal components in a variety of industries, most notably, the aerospace industry. While there are many benefits to using composite materials, there are also inherent challenges when working with composite materials. Composite structures are often formed into complex organic shapes, and they're subject to tighter tolerancing and accuracy requirements than is a similar component made from plastic or another material. This creates the need for highly accurate, often complex mold tools and patterns to be machined. PowerMill software and PowerShape software are uniquely suited for rapidly producing high-quality composite tooling, as we'll demonstrate in this course. Another significant manufacturing challenge is machining the completed composite piece. Companies often employ the use of highly complex and expensive fixtures in attempts to accurately align and set up the part for machining while minimizing the time they have in non-productive, manual setup processes. This course will demonstrate how PowerInspect software can make possible the use of simple, inexpensive work holding while increasing accuracy and repeatability of the part setup. This tool can also be used to verify the machining operations before the part is moved from the machine, making any required rework much faster and simpler, and significantly reducing the common bottleneck at the quality department.

Digital transformation ​is how manufacturing processes are managed throughout production on the factory floor. It helps operations collect the capacity limits, real-time asset usage, and effectiveness.​ This is achieved by production planning and tracking, empowering interested parties to evaluate production efficiency and identify areas of congestion. Composite materials and particularly carbon fiber are some of the hottest materials in the manufacturing world today. Renowned for their high strength-to-weight ratio, carbon fiber parts are becoming more popular in traditional fields such as automotive and construction. Carbon fiber parts are created using additive-manufacturing processes and advanced techniques. Due to their high cost, efficiency is crucial to these kinds of parts. Autodesk, Inc., has created a manufacturing suite for the design, simulation, and manufacturing of composites materials such as carbon fiber. This platform will cover all of the production strategies that are currently in the market, including hand layup, fiber placement, and tape laying. This is an introductory course to the entire platform. Also included is the end-to-end composite manufacturing process. This session features TruPlan.

Deriving a product design into a manufacturing process is a continuous challenge. Catching up with the latest design changes is often a manual and error-prone, slow process performed in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. With the Vault PLM solution, this process can be vastly improved as both the engineering BOM and the manufacturing BOM are accessible and linked in a single system. Workflow mechanisms help ensure that data received from engineering gets transitioned properly and extended to define manufacturing processes. The resulting manufacturing then gets published to ERP upon approval of manufacturing change orders. In this session, you will see how this process is managed in an integrated environment. We will use a custom-built smart editor to automate this process as much as possible and to provide visual indicators to help ensure a proper alignment of structures in an easy way.

The aerospace industry has always necessitated a high degree of precision-be that in the aerofoil designs of the wings or the complex electronics on board. Designs may be as detailed as possible, but these ideas need to be accurate when they become a reality. This class will provide insight into how certain aerospace parts are manufactured, such as bladed disks (blisks) for a turbine. Blisks often need to be machined near perfectly, as any change in geometry has the chance to drastically reduce the fuel efficiency of an entire system. They are also usually created from incredibly strong materials like titanium or Inconel-further increasing the difficulty of manufacture. The Autodesk Advanced Consulting Team in Birmingham, United Kingdom, has a lot of experience with this sort of process, working with a wide variety of customers within the industry. We'll share some of the experiences we have encountered over recent years and how their related engineering challenges were overcome.

This course aims to level set, upskill, and provide an appreciation of subtractive manufacturing. This deep dive will focus on capturing manufacturing intent from the design, and we will cover available subtractive methods, programming techniques, and part alignment.

AI is everywhere but how does it actually help engineering teams working with CAD, BOMs, and Vault software? This class will demonstrate real-world applications of AI on top of Vault, focusing on engineering and manufacturing processes. Using live examples, we'll show how structured data such as eBOMs and mBOMs can be interpreted, transformed, and enriched using AI while keeping engineers in control. You'll see how natural-language interfaces, rule-based automation, and AI-assisted decision making support tasks like BOM transformation, process planning, and validation. The session will highlight proven architectures, integration patterns, and limitations when introducing AI into Vault-based environments.

Robotics is an exciting interdisciplinary field with applications in every industry, assisting humans with everything from home mobility to manufacturing to space exploration. This workshop will dig into the underlying mechanical design and manufacturing practices that drive development of robotic systems. This class will demonstrate CAD workflows for robotic systems in Fusion 360 software, including tips and best practices on part and assembly levels. We’ll discuss how CAD modeling and design for manufacturing go hand in hand, including a survey of design requirements and materials in manufacturing processes that are typically used in mechanical systems. Finally, you’ll learn about using documentation to effectively communicate manufacturing and archiving robotic assembly data.

Discover how Fusion Production software (a cloud-based tool for scheduling, tracking, and machine monitoring) works as part of a wider Autodesk manufacturing ecosystem and can give contract manufacturers and job shops a digital workflow to begin smart manufacturing. Establishing a connected network of processes within a job shop not only gives an overview of performance data, but also can be shared in upstream processes to unify the disciplines of design and manufacturing. We will demonstrate a workflow starting in CAD, moving to CAM, and ending with production management within Fusion Production. This will involve showing how we create and populate digital work instructions for process definition, conduct production tracking and quality assurance, and perform CNC machine monitoring. Finally, we will see how production data can be fed back into design and manufacturing teams to identify underperforming processes and make informed decisions to improve the return on existing assets.
