One of the first issues owners face at the onset of a project is deciding on which project delivery method to use. Design-bid-build is slowly going extinct, especially for large, complicated projects with challenging schedules. Construction management at risk (CMAR) is a more attractive method, even though it doesn’t quite describe how we work. Design-build is on the rise, but many owners still feel like they’re paying a premium by preselecting the team. Lastly, integrated project delivery (IPD) leaves a lot to be desired, as most of the owners are still not willing to share the risk but expect the benefits. So, if none of those methods align with how we work, what does the future of project delivery look like? In your experience, are any of the current contracts and procurement methods truly aligned with how we ideally need to work? More owners are implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) into their facilities management (FM) strategies and project-delivery methodologies, but how are they able to ensure the success of these new workflows? Much like the objectives identified in our Autodesk University 2014 session (BO6648: Defining a Holistic Owner-Driven BIM Project Delivery Standard), The Ohio State University is exploring the "people" aspect of their BIM Project Delivery Standard (the external facing document for the architecture, engineering, and construction community) and the BIM Implementation Strategy developed for the university’s internal Project Team members. This session will explore the people, process, and technology initiatives of the 2 documents. We’ll also present the importance of educating the university’s staff on this new standard, as well as how to successfully implement the appropriate technologies and workflows, thus empowering the university to fully realize the opportunity to reduce the total cost of ownership of their buildings through the application of BIM.

This sharing session will touch upon PennDOT's (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's) innovative initiatives with augmented reality, drone data capture for both design and construction, and its Project Delivery Collaboration Center solution. We currently have multiple pilot projects underway and would like to share our lessons learned and how we plan to tie them all together with a single platform. We plan to make our Project Delivery Collaboration Center solution available this fall. It will provide the backbone for connecting our current legacy systems, future systems, and design collaboration. It is a one-stop shop for the department designers for project file management, workflow, schedule oversight, project health, and more. We plan to cover our work with Datumate, Reconstruct, Elecosoft (Asta) Powerproject, IMAJION, and the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform.

In Australia, procuring and delivering infrastructure projects digitally is still in its infancy. We need to encourage our clients and not confuse-simplicity is the key. We've all heard the cliché "a picture tells a thousand words," but there's real value in using images to promote engineering content. Images help us learn, grab attention, explain tough concepts, and inspire. Master Information Delivery Plans (MIDP) and levels of detail (LOD), which are usually very detailed wordy descriptions, can be easily represented through diagrams-which can then be used as a basis for developing Task Information Delivery Plans (TIDP). I have used these diagrams successfully on projects with government clients, and can easily explain the required inputs, what will be delivered through the milestones of delivery, and the outputs at each stage of project delivery. This will also let you build content within Building Information Modeling (BIM)-enabled platforms for consistency in delivery.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) for infrastructure has rapidly emerged to transform the way transportation and civil infrastructure agencies, organizations, consultants, and contractors plan, design, and construct their projects, and maintain, operate, and manage their assets. BIM and CAD are effective tools for project delivery and they’re even more valuable when integrated with geographic information system (GIS) to provide asset management. This class will provide value-based deployment strategies, best practices, challenges, and case studies of successful BIM-CAD-GIS projects.

This industry talk will focus on a new perspective on integrated project delivery (IPD) of sustainable, high-performing buildings. They can only be achieved through a building with integrated building systems, which can only be produced through an integrated process. An integrated process depends on the right people and an integrated team, which needs integrated information—that is, BIM+—to function effectively and efficiently. Simulation and visualization are the primary ways in which BIM+ informs the integrated team. Collaboration and colocation are the primary ways that enable the integrated team to integrate processes. Production management methods enable the productive design, fabrication, and construction of the integrated building system. Outcome metrics define the performance of the building and validate the integrated building system. All of this is supported by the appropriate agreement or framework. This session will present how The Ohio State University has successfully developed a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project delivery standard that enables the model to serve as a single source of truth for relevant spatial and asset information throughout the building lifecycle. This delivery standard has truly "begun with the end in mind" by taking advantage of the knowledge gained from the BIM for Existing Buildings portion of the Buckeye BIM Initiative. We'll highlight how the Revit portion of this deliverable will work in collaboration with COBie structured data to facilitate its utilization in effective data turnover. We'll highlight the need to implement technology solutions and workflows to enable the use of the model across the University and to support interoperability with other data systems. Last, we'll cover lessons learned, continuing challenges, and how the standard has evolved over the last 2.5 years of existence.

Digital delivery is a must, not an option. The region is a hotbed of innovation in how we design, create, and build, integrating the best of experience from other areas and driving its own path forward. We will hear from panelists that have successfully delivered giga projects on the impact of innovation on project delivery and management, working with a broad spectrum of teams and companies at different levels of digital maturity. We'll explore information management from concept to operations, informed decision-making through the application of digital.

This session will present how an enlightened building owner (The Ohio State University) has successfully partnered/collaborated with both a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-savvy architect and contractor to develop a BIM project delivery standard that enables the model to serve as a single source of truth for relevant spatial and asset information throughout the building lifecycle. This delivery standard has truly begun with the end in mind by taking advantage of the knowledge gained from the BIM for the existing buildings portion of the Buckeye BIM Initiative. We'll highlight how the .RVT portion of this deliverable will work in collaboration with Revit software's COBie Toolkit-structured data to facilitate its utilization in asset management, space tracking, geographical information system (GIS), and sustainability. Lastly, we will highlight the need to implement Technology Solutions and workflows to enable the use of the model across the university and to support interoperability with other data systems.

This class will go over all aspects of an integrated project delivery (IPD) / Building Information Modeling (BIM) project for health care or science projects. We'll review different methods of project delivery and effective implementation plans. During the class, we'll cover fundamentals of laser scanning for IPD/BIM projects and we'll show examples. We'll review and discuss owner agreements and lean practices that are used on the IPD projects. In regards to legal aspects, we'll discuss some information for different project scenarios.

This panel discussion will explore opportunities to manage construction execution by creating a performance-based strategy to align project performance with anticipated outcomes, thus creating the high-performing building. Using principles such as the simple framework (Integrating project delivery 2017; Reed, Fischer, Khanzode, Ashcraft), production planning methods, lean principles, and integrated design and information, the discussion will explain strategy, practice, and vision of future state. The panel will provide insight into the theory and opportunities for improving performance. Once the framework has been agreed on, teams can operate a performance management system by defining the performance criteria and validating performance through data collection for specific and measurable metrics. We’ll look at how system alignment throughout the project lifecycle in a collaborative environment provides transparent and robust information to the team for optimized performance.

During this class, projects members of the TELT Infrastructure megaproject will explain how to improve operational efficiency with the support of the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform and different desktop software systems. Digital project delivery helps solve one of the main challenges of the construction project: collaboration. It does this by providing up-to-date information, documents, and models, and initiating the revision workflow and the process of the design problems on the platform. From reality capture to existing-condition modeling, from design authoring to design review, the JV has been able to embrace the benefit of constructing digitally before constructing in reality, thanks to the cloud collaboration.

The Norwegian National Railway Administration has set a new standard for model-based project delivery. The Administration now requires that all subject disciplines deliver models—at all levels of detail—and that all construction will be done using these models. In this class the Building Information Modeling (BIM) manager for Norway’s InterCity Project will discuss the benefits and lessons learned, and will provide a demonstration of this concept using InterCity as the example. The InterCity Project is a complex 250-kilometer alignment of high-speed double-track railway through 22 towns and cities. Adding to the complexity, the project was split into sections and awarded to different consultants, which required keen coordination and collaboration under the direction of the Railway Administration. An agnostic approach to software and model creation is used—because it is only the resulting model that matters most to the Administration. AIA Approved

Is it possible to disrupt traditional workflow standards and have fun at the same time? The Construction Progress Coalition (CPC) is a nonprofit organization uniting architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals, technology solution providers (TSPs), and their governing organizations (GOs) around a shared language to define project interoperability standards. This common data exchange (CDX) language is not a standard per se, but a framework for stakeholders to collaboratively decide the process and data standards where they intersect with company and project requirements. To communicate effectively in the digital age, we need standards. However, those standards must be flexible enough to accommodate the unique aspects of each project. Together with our panel of industry and technology experts, we’ll discuss how to define and implement project delivery standards in more-engaging and enjoyable ways with the help of a CDX playbook.

In this class, we will cover the Construction Institute's best practice of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) and how Autodesk's project delivery platform supports the methodology. We will illustrate how platforms like BIM 360 and Forge support AWP workflows and increase project visibility, construction productivity, quality, and safety.

Departments of transportation and other highway agencies are attempting to integrate their workflows and information processes as they move from design through the construction stage of the infrastructure lifecycle. This effort is designed to achieve greater efficiencies and cost savings through better collaboration during the construction process, and help facilitate information flows into and out of the field. This panel (under the direction of Esri and Autodesk) will assemble three best practice examples from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT), and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) to present their current initiatives and engage in a panel discussion. The session will focus on the successes and difficulties each agency encountered as they sought to streamline their workflows associated with the digital delivery process, and how Esri and Autodesk helped them better align their processes with technology.
