In the last five years Iloura has grown from a single facility employing 30 artists to two facilities that peak at 240 artists.  Over the course of this journey our use of Shotgun has evolved and changed from a basic production management tool to something that is integral to our tech and production pipes and something that provides integrated facility management systems across HR, Operations, Recruiting, Sales, VFX Producing and Finance.  This presentation details the evolution of our use of Shotgun and how Shotgun has been integral to Iloura’s success at all stages of our growth path

In this class, we’ll explore a dynamic brick façade in Revit software. You’ll learn about several modeling techniques you can use to model protruding brick elements. Then, after exploring generic model nested families with arrays, you’ll learn about the advantages of using curtain walls with custom curtain panels. We’ll also explore the benefits and limitations of using curtain walls for complex façade elements. Then, you’ll learn how to use Dynamo to push your façade designs to the next level. You’ll learn how to map an image onto a brick wall to modify the extrusion depth of protruding bricks. You’ll also see how it is possible to randomize the brick patterns. Overall, the workflow presented will allow you to create innovative façade designs while saving countless hours of tedious work.

The pandemic has accelerated the use of technology in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. As we all settle into the "new normal,” there has been significant technological change. We can no longer create the same traditional design teams and expect to deliver on all of the coming infrastructure work. We must rethink how we build our teams to support all of our clients' needs. As we look to capitalize on immersive collaboration platforms, such as The Wild, we are adding entirely new skill sets and resources to our design teams, including immersive media specialists, digital delivery experts, trainers, and adoption strategists. This is enabling rapid growth to our business and changing the way we deliver our infrastructure projects. As a result, we're developing novel adoption strategies to ensure long-term success for our clients in this new digital reality.

Annotation of shop drawings in Fabrication CADmep software can be a time-consuming process, and if it is not done properly, it can have devastating results. This class will cover these struggles in detail, along with looking at solutions in the Fabrication CADmep 2016 software release. We will describe the best practices for getting shop drawings produced with the correct annotation sizes per viewport, as well as tips for moving text in a single viewport and NOT the others. We will also touch on best practices when using CTEXT—creating the block and report to go along with it—to ensure proper scaling within viewports. Fabrication CADmep 2016 software also has a new command for text placement location using LISP routines. We will show examples of each of these advanced tips and tricks, and we will have discussion time at the end.

Learn how we used laser scanning and Building Design Suite to coordinate the installation of a new chiller and air handling unit in the basement of one of Florida's premier performance venues. We demonstrate how we used ReCap™, Revit®-based software, Navisworks® software, and Apple® iPads® tablets to create a 4D clash detection model to preplan the movement of a 8.5-ton chiller into the existing mechanical room. Because performances scheduled throughout the construction limited downtime, having an efficient process was critical. The virtual design and construction (VDC) team learned the most efficient ways to transfer point cloud files using the ReCap RCS format, perform clash detection in the point cloud in Navisworks, create models, and distribute the information to the team for use in the field. This lean process helped all team members visualize and plan their work, and it provided the owner with a useful as-built model for future work.

You learn how to wrap your own domain-specific logic around the Revit API while managing database transactions and sub-transactions along the way. We discuss strategies for handling changes to your add-in that are likely to occur over time including modifying and upgrading data structures and Revit families. I share some successes and failures from my own experience and things you need to consider so your add-in doesn't get eaten alive once it ventures into the wild. We also briefly touch on several other topics including geometry parsing, view-specific versus view-independent API functionality, error handling, and licensing your add-in. Attendees should have a basic understanding of the Revit API and C# or Visual Basic® programming concepts.

Learn how we took a concept idea from inception to construction using virtual reality (VR) tools. We'll begin by stepping through design meetings, reviews, and daily design working sessions. The course will highlight how VR can be an effective, efficient design tool—not just a cool idea. We'll demonstrate how to make design team members comfortable in headsets in order to engage project teams to provide valuable feedback about design, possible construction issues, and operational hurdles. You'll learn ways to integrate VR into design and project visualization. In addition, we'll touch on overcoming obstacles and challenges that can arise when implementing VR into your normal workflow.

Reality capture has become the new normal for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry in delivering and executing projects. But as is the case with any new method, the first few years are always the Wild Wild West—with minimal standards, compliance checks, and quality procedures in place. This roundtable will give participants the ability to have detailed discussions with industry experts who’ve been in the trenches on hundreds of reality-capture jobs, including static LiDAR (light detection and ranging), drones, and photogrammetry. This roundtable will focus discussions on methods for determining whether to procure services or move them in house, staffing requirements for project execution, and critical elements to better ensure successful usage of reality-capture data. The health of marine ecosystems is declining rapidly from the combined effects of climate change, like rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and sea level rise, and these effects are compounded by more direct human impacts such as pollution and over-fishing. Despite overwhelming evidence of these problems, and the proven effectiveness of their respective solutions, ocean environments like coral reefs remain over-exploited, under-protected, and out of mind. Therefore, the Hydrous uses creative methods to support scientific discovery and translate research into public understanding and ocean conservation. The Hydrous uses photogrammetry to non-destructively create 3D models of coral reefs in the wild and from museum specimens, the data from which contribute to ongoing research, historical preservation, art programs, and ocean education. The Hydrous also creates immersive experiences for virtual field trips and 360 footage, which have been viewed online by millions. The ultimate goal of the Hydrous is to connect people to marine environments and increase ocean literacy- through expeditions, technology, and education- to so that our blue planet can be further admired, understood, and protected.

This new era of technology is driving a lot of innovation in all aspects of design. All product manufacturers are embracing innovation and new technology in order to maintain or advance their current production cycles. But, incorporating new technology and innovative manufacturing practices requires a solid plan, not a wild guess. The path to innovation must start with a thorough analysis of your current process. It is not enough to say, ‘the process is inefficient,” or “new tech will solve our problems.” It is critical to properly outline and identify bottlenecks or over- and under-utilized equipment and practices. Once the process is properly defined, organizations can move beyond reaction-based decision making to predictive-based planning. In this class, we’ll demonstrate how the current Factory Design Utilities may be enhanced with ProModel Process Simulator.

RT/VR has been here for a while, we are all familiar with the different players and we all have been wowed by its advancement in the architectural visualization industry. Now that the dust has settled and the technology is out in the wild, it's our job to discover how to use it in a meaningful way that goes beyond entertainment.



Is RT/VR a tool that will help designers and people in general understand spaces and interact with them in a unique way? If so, where do we go from here?



We will talk about where we are today - and where we want to be in the future. Then, we will walk through exploratory samples that helped us develop some of the tools and to understand its more practical uses that could be provided as a service to our clients. Finally, we will show a few real-world samples of the work we have done to help our clients express their vision.

Have you ever had a dream, idea, or passion to inspire change in your organization? Innovation and hackathons seem to be all the rage these days-they're all over the Internet as ways to transform your business. This industry talk will discuss how a stodgy Midwestern EPCM (engineering, procurement, and construction management) organization took the leap of faith with a first hackathon in 2014, going on to make the hackathon an annual event. Additionally, we'll review how we launched an innovation platform for every employee to participate in ideation, project definition, business development, and execution stages throughout the entire year, and how this program is now launching into regular hackathon sessions at each office in the organization. We will also discuss innovation tools and practices, including Adobe's Kickbox Canvas, Autodesk's LUMIAMI, and Wild/World analyzer.

We deliver our projects differently from most building services companies. Our engineers generate project deliverables rather than CAD technicians. As such, the majority of engineers deliver projects in Revit software, creating intelligent models to meet clients’ requirements. We’ve been delivering projects in 3D for 10 years; however, only recently has the engineers’ preference become working in Revit rather than AutoCAD software. This shift is a result of the work completed throughout the last few years; engineers now believe delivering projects in Revit is the simplest and quickest method. We will guide attendees through the work we have undertaken to achieve this, looking at the easiest wins before moving to the more ambitious, including the development of bespoke tools. We will look at how we can automate boring tasks, giving engineers more time to be creative. We will touch on the issues we have experienced, cover tips and tricks we have discovered, and show how to maintain tools and resources once they are out in the “wild.”
