Transforming Construction with Manufacturing Technology

Negar Kalantar of California College of the Arts shares the work of four companies whose innovations are bringing architecture into the future.

A living wall that cleans the air through bio-filtration? A robotic clay 3D printing system for construction? A printed material that can be either flexible or rigid as needed to dissipate the energy of high winds? These are just a few examples of innovations currently being explored in the Autodesk Technology Centers (ATC) in San Francisco and Boston. And together, they have the potential to revolutionize the practice of architecture by incorporating approaches and processes from the world of manufacturing. Negar Kalantar, co-director at California College of the Arts’ Digital Craft Lab and a resident of the San Francisco ATC, shares the work and what it means for the industry.

About the speaker

As co-director of the Digital Craft Lab at California College of the Arts, Dr. Negar Kalantar supports and promotes research in architectural design, digital fabrication, material science, data visualization, and robotics. As part of the start-up CREO, she is a resident of the Autodesk Technology Center in San Francisco. She holds a PhD in the Science of Architecture from Virginia Tech.
