This class will dive deep into how laser scanning is taking construction management into a new orbit. We will use Real-life case studies to demonstrate the use of laser scanning for the following: defection monitoring of structures; virtual erection of structural elements; deviation analysis of structures and systems; leveling and alignments; coordinate extraction and as-built management; cut-out management; progress monitoring; quantity surveying; and construction inspection. Innovations in the use of laser scanning is bringing a shift in construction management. The class will discuss case studies for each of the benefits mentioned above—how it is improving quality, reducing rework, lowering costs, improve site safety and time, and dramatically improving construction quality.

4D time simulation in Navisworks software for construction projects are often complicated BIM (Building Information Modeling) services to be used on a daily basis. Reasons can include problems in model coordination, time and element mismatches, time model execution availability, and more. With this approach, we will use the Dynamo player and Dynamo workflows over Revit 2021 software to clean, manage, label, and even create a time schedule so 4D simulation can be easily created and the communication proposal facilitates model coordination and execution. We will cover several routine workflows so that all elements for any type of intelligent model are aligned clean and useful for project management, enabling us to link the model and time schedules with Navisworks in record time. This instructional demo is the synthesis of 13 years of simulations from different projects to make 4D simulation a required task for all projects.

Often engineers and designers are asked to provide preliminary designs for roadways, utilities, and infrastructure with minimal existing data. An advantage of using AutoCAD Civil 3D software for preliminary design is its ability to access and use data available through geographic information system (GIS). Before ground survey is available, you can retrieve surface data, political boundaries, roadways, and water feature information directly from GIS and reference it in to AutoCAD Civil 3D software. With the preliminary design complete, move straight into production once the ground survey and other data becomes available by swapping out the GIS data and using the design information generated in AutoCAD Civil 3D software.

How common is it that a company's geographic information system (GIS) department has all of this useful data but the civil department never uses it? The answer: it’s common. AutoCAD Civil 3D software comes with the full suite of AutoCAD Map 3D software tools, and it’s high time you learn how to use them. Many of the AutoCAD Map 3D tools are not just for GIS professionals, but also for civil designers and surveyors. AutoCAD Map 3D is the bridge between the GIS world and the CAD / Building Information Modeling (BIM) world, and the gap is getting smaller every day. Reducing design time and lowering costs are just 2 benefits from using GIS data that already exists—and that may exist in the GIS department on the other side of your cube wall. We’ll cover some of the core AutoCAD Map 3D tools, including Map Connect (FDO connection), ODBC, and Object Data linking, as well as fundamental map styling.

The BIM 360 Design product provides access to the Design Collaboration and Document Management modules within the BIM 360 platform. In addition, access (entitlements) are provided for Revit Cloud Worksharing and Collaboration for Civil 3D software. With these entitlements, it is possible to achieve true collaboration between all members of the project team. Two experts will discuss and demonstrate the workflow for such cloud-based collaboration using Revit software and Civil 3D software. We’ll examine the similarities and differences and offer some best practices advice. The session will wrap up with a demonstration of sharing data between Revit and Civil 3D using BIM 360 software.

This class will examine the methods and benefits obtained in the implementation of a geotechnical Building Information Modeling (BIM) utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D software and HoleBASE SI for a large transportation project with 118-plus borings within the Seattle area. McMillen Jacobs Associates knew they needed better visualizing methods and improved workflow efficiency when working with geotechnical data than those that the firm's legacy gINT system offered. The firm had a strong desire to utilize the functionality that Autodesk technology offered. The aim was to let this data be easily viewed and exploited in AutoCAD Civil 3D. The class will cover the transition to the AutoCAD Civil 3D / Keynetix solution, why a change was required, the new workflows developed to incorporate both legacy and new data, and the integration between the data management system HoleBASE SI and AutoCAD Civil 3D. We will also discuss any problems encountered in the process, together with the benefits gained and future opportunities the new technology will create.

Many may think that one should separate Navisworks software and BIM 360 Model Coordination on a project by choosing one or the other for clash modeling. This could not be further from the truth. This class will highlight case studies of recent Tetra Tech projects that have resulted in a greater than 50% drop in average time spent at the end of projects for disciplines resolving clashes by using BIM 360 Model Coordination and Navisworks. Attendees will learn how to easily start working within BIM 360 Model Coordination, which will enable an earlier start to clash coordination in the project’s design cycle before running a more comprehensive clash analysis using Navisworks. This class will also provide tips, tricks, and innovative processes for working on projects in BIM 360 to easily set up the BIM 360 Model Coordination service, and we’ll cover the new features added in 2021 for bringing these results into Navisworks.

Attendees of this discussion will learn how others perform similar tasks during the day-to-day operations of consulting engineering and surveying companies. There is always another way, and perhaps the way someone else is doing it is better or more efficient than your way. The outline of this discussion will range from using Infrastructure Design Suite software for conceptual planning efforts to organizing your layers and detailed design efforts. Topics will include how we create our basemaps from scratch, how we separate our manual linework from AutoCAD Civil 3D software-generated linework, how we handle grading efforts, and how we bring it all together for plan production.

To work effectively, Civil 3D software requires a myriad of data, including templates, libraries, subassemblies, and more. Now add in a need for users to be mobile. How can someone possibly understand what all this data is, keep it up to date, and enable users to work off-network—all with company standards in place? That’s where this class comes in. We’ll summarize best practices for configuration of all files required to make Civil 3D run like clockwork, including easy tool-palette configuration and flexible AutoCAD profile management. We’ll use scripts to set up a simple file-syncing system between users and the server, enabling them to work off-network with all company standards in place. When users log back in, they’ll automatically get any updates made to the standards. Sound like a dream? It’s not. The speaker has implemented this at many other firms, saving time and money and bringing a new meaning to the phase “CAD Standards.” All you need to do is show up to this class!

Only One. AutoCAD software introduces a whole new suite of toolsets for the AutoCAD user. The AutoCAD Map 3D toolset goes far beyond mapping, but lets AutoCAD drawings be connected and work with data from many different systems. Not only does AutoCAD Map 3D let the user import and export data, but also it can create live connections to geographic information system (GIS) data, asset management systems, system inventories, and other enterprise data systems. It lets the user add attributes to all AutoCAD objects, not just blocks. It includes specialized tools to clean up drawings and label objects directly from object attributes. We will touch on the workflows the traditional AutoCAD user needs in order to take advantage of these tools using real-life examples.

AutoCAD software is a particularly extensible program, and that ability lets you alter the interface to suit your needs. This customizability isn't just altering where buttons are in the toolbars, but easily adding commands to both buttons, as well as to the menu bar. While AutoCAD for Mac software doesn't quite have all of the capabilities of the Microsoft Windows version, creating macros, adding commands to the menu, and utilizing basic LISP routines are all capabilities we can capitalize on in AutoCAD for Mac. This class will review how to use the CUI to add commands to the toolsets and menus, how to alter and add custom tool panels in the toolsets, and how to load LISP routines so they're accessible every time you load a drawing. We'll even learn how to write a few basic LISP routines to get you started.
