The interoperability between Autodesk Revit and Autodesk CFD can be challenging in a number of areas. Most Revit design models typically contain a high level of detail for construction, gaps in geometry, clashes, and other unresolved conflicts that can create issues when imported to the CFD environment. In this session, participants will learn how to develop and maintain a Revit model for geometry creation suitable for Autodesk CFD analysis using industry best-practices, and review examples of the type of Revit geometry that can be repurposed and what should be replaced. The session will also present methods of leveraging Revit's powerful data, visualization, coordination, and documentation functionality to enhance CFD development, design coordination, data management, and reporting.

Using the example of a recently delivered design of a 96,000-seat stadium featuring an enormous cable net roof, Mark will outline a unique approach to planning and implementing robust and efficient workflows that embrace the latest technological developments. The project was anchored in Autodesk Revit and Revit’s flexibility and openness was exploited to document and communicate a fully integrated building design with highly complex and irregular geometry. The class will introduce the application of “mass bespoke” thinking to a construction design project outlining how a change of mindset can demonstrably increase productivity and resilience to change. With seamless integration into existing design pipelines, fully automated virtual wind-tunnel analysis will enable studios to assess performance criteria, visualize airflow, and make informed design decisions at any stage of development. Designed to provide reliable and consistent insight, the Studio Wind Tunnel Project solves traditional challenges associated with vehicle aerodynamic simulation.

Increased renewable energy in power grids has reduced the load factor of coal-based power plants. Independent thermal power producers face regulations to shut plants or operate at reduced load. However, there are grid stability and availability issues with solar and wind power. To address both, existing thermal power plants need to operate flexibly. In this mode, a plant quickly ramps down from 100% load to as low as 30% and ramps back up, based on renewable surplus or deficit, respectively. This deviation from actual design parameters leads to thermal mechanical stresses in equipment, impacting equipment life and site personnel safety. Material residual life is studied under such adverse operating conditions. Challenge is handled by modeling and simulating wide variations in steam process conditions on thick-walled piping. Autodesk Fusion 360 and Autodesk CFD software help us understand transient thermal behavior. This talk will focus on new business prospects, and how to predict equipment life and ensure grid stability.

Plant designers face a wide variety of tough-to-solve ventilation and flow control challenges. How can contaminant releases be controlled more effectively? How can you improve energy efficiency? In this round-table discussion we will briefly give an overview of the Autodesk, Inc., engagement in the various industry consortia and the existing interfaces for the process plant industry and the oil and gas industry. We would like to learn which interfaces and data formats you're using when you exchange PIDs, line lists, bills of materials, 3D piping, steel, and equipment models with all the associated data. Which interface are you using to receive data from FEED (front end engineering design) and to hand over to stress calculation, project management, and procurement system? This class will review the new wind simulation technology available in Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2015 software. We will review the current landscape of code-based wind design (specifically ASCE 7) and we'll discuss the challenges of applying these methods to different structure types. We'll then examine Robot Structural Analysis Professional software's unique computational fluid dynamic (CFD) wind simulation tools, and we'll discuss how they compare to the code-based approaches. Using sample wind simulation models, we will review the wind simulation analysis parameters and the analysis process, and we'll discuss the simulation results. Taking as an example a real-world case—a dam discharge tunnel—this class will show how to handle a model that originated from digital scan, taking it toward a model that is at the same time simple, but keeping the relevant features. We will explain the workflow of turning the complex surface model into point clouds and simplified surfaces, and then generate a Simulation-friendly model—all using a wide range of Autodesk, Inc., products (like AutoCAD Civil 3D software, ReCap software, Inventor software, Remake software, and Fusion 360 software). Having the final model, we will explain how to set it up in Autodesk CFD software using the latest features of Autodesk CFD 2017 software—especially Hydrostatic Pressure—showing how it works and generates accurate results predicting the flow in and around the tunnel. Results derived from simulations are used for the design of the tunnel entrance to maximize the efficiency of the discharge, and to avoid problematic effects like cavitation. This class will discuss the tools available in Autodesk® Moldflow® Insight for simulating the dynamic temperature changes experienced in the mold during an injection molding process by using the Cool Finite Element Method (FEM) functionality. Topics covered will include modeling requirements, process setup and workflow, theory, result interpretation, and validation examples. Focus will also be given to new functionality available in the Scandium Technology Preview supporting dual-domain part models, thermoset molding and variable coolant inlet temperature processes, including Rapid Heating and Cooling of the Mold (RHCM), also known as Rapid Temperature Cycling or Variotherm. In addition, examples will be shown to demonstrate how to model complex 3D cooling channels (conformal cooling).

The issue of taking architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) models into simulation software is becoming a hot topic in the industry as companies are starting to include simulation in their Building Information Modeling (BIM) efforts. This class will describe the workflow involved in going from a full Revit model to Autodesk CFD results, providing a set of tools to modify, simplify, and customize our Revit model so the transition and the setup is optimum. Then, it will describe how to set the actual model in Autodesk CFD, analyze results, and take the relevant design decisions to optimize our designs. The workflow will be based on real examples from the AEC industry, stressing the importance of following best practices to reduce project time and costs. The class can be taken as documentation and a great set of tips and tricks to take models from Revit to Autodesk CFD for future AEC projects. It is important to note that a Revit expert (Mathijs Van Baal) will be a co-speaker to fully cover all aspects and questions that may arise from our talk.

A real-life metro project design will be demonstrated through using Autodesk AEC Collection. Design Authoring, 3D Coordination, Existing Conditions Modelling, Creation of Design Documents and Engineering Analysis were the BIM uses of the project. Stations, tunnels, underground utilities and real environment of the project were modeled by using Revit, Infraworks and Civil 3D. Autodesk CFD, Revit, MagiCAD tools helped designers for engineering analysis and simulation studies. Active use of technologies such as reality capture, virtual reality played an important role in the design process.
