Federal, state, local, and city governments are setting ambitious targets for reducing energy consumption of existing buildings through building retrofits. A challenge has been the scaling of energy analysis across large building portfolios in order to identify and prioritize the buildings and retrofit measures. Prior methods were limited to single buildings, but this session will introduce new capabilities that enable evaluation of entire building portfolios with minimal data inputs required. Results are presented dynamically in the context of a digital model and a custom Forge-based building portfolio management dashboard that serves as an executive summary for users or consumers of the rapid energy modeling (REM) tools, and enables easier communication and understanding of the workflow and results with clients. The session is intended for owners and managers, including the Department of Defense (DoD); federal, state, and local government; airports; higher education; architectural firms; and planning entities.

The industry is moving from mass production to customized solutions, creating a tremendous increase in the demand for custom BIM (Building Information Modeling) software solutions. However, custom solutions are expensive to develop. With Forge, you can build custom BIM configurators with minimum investment and time. We created a custom simulation app for HVAC professionals to produce a sustainable design. The app simulates the performance of design spaces and HVAC systems configuration in the cloud. The class will demonstrate how to use Forge to create a new user-defined office build space. We will elaborate on how the assembly of complex 3D HVAC system configurations can be created. You will see how Revit design automation APIs can construct an accurate intelligent model on the server. Attendees will learn these techniques, as well as how to create vast varieties of online BIM system configurators such as kitchen design, furniture design, infrastructure design, and others.

This class will describe Goldbeck's experience in the development of their very own cloud services for the automation of model checking. Goldbeck's BIM (Building Information Modeling) department is cooperating with Autodesk in the definition and creation of a framework for automating the execution of standard checks. The project aims at capitalizing on cloud computing to increase the overall quality level and free up resources for other tasks.

Design Automation for Inventor software generally enables the desktop APIs to be used in the cloud—similar to how they would work on the desktop, but without the need of any installed software or dependent licenses. An additional, easily overlooked advantage of Design Automation for Inventor is its capability to run iLogic scripts in the cloud. These scripts being embedded in the CAD file itself can be programmed to auto execute under certain conditions. This class will address taking advantage of this capability to combine the Forge Design Automation API with iLogic to create a configurator by modifying an input Inventor file (IPT) in the cloud, according to the inputs provided by the user on an easy-to-use user interface. The results can be viewed immediately on a web browser using the Forge Viewer API, and are available for download in multiple formats such as IPT, IDW, and PDF. This web application sample uses the latest web technologies and is OS independent and mobile-device friendly.

You have probably heard that next-generation BIM 360 products are being built on top of Autodesk Forge platform, and seen various demos highlighting the advanced technology that Forge provides. What does this mean to a BIM 360 enterprise customer? By leveraging the "free" and "add-on" Forge web services that come with BIM 360 subscription, enterprise customers will be able to elevate the return-on-investment of BIM 360 to the next level. CAD software requirements are drastically changing from the traditional use of desktop-based software usually consumed by the design department. Demand for cloud-based CAD web apps (also consumed by non-technical executives) is increasing. In the class, we will see how the Forge platform and various cloud infra providers can be utilized together to create modern-day vertical CAD configurators as per the specific need of each organization. Based on stats and test cases, we will demonstrate how a serverless CAD configurator can scale up massively to address the peak-hour needs of industry while staying low on budget. BIM (Building Information Modeling) practitioners are seeking more-efficient ways to analyze the accumulated data in BIM 360 projects on a daily basis. Microsoft Power BI is a popular, powerful tool that provides intelligent dashboards to inspect the data. In this class, we will show you three different ways to analyze BIM 360 projects data with Power BI for BIM coordination and communication purposes. The first way will be with no coding; the second will be with a little bit of coding; and the third way will be with real programing (and handy templates). You will also learn how to build a simple app that integrates Power BI and Forge. Within the industrial water market, it can be a real challenge to bridge the gap between tools that are great for designing buildings and tools that are great for designing process plants. Achieving design synchronization between spatial and schematic designs with a high level of confidence is the ultimate goal. However, producing process schematics and spatial drawings and managing the equipment data becomes complex when dealing with traditional data silos in current project execution processes. True data-driven workflows will require innovation and disruption to achieve next-level results. This is one story of how Revit software, Dynamo, and Forge have helped us look at this traditional problem from a new perspective. We’ve solved some longstanding challenges, and we still have some unanswered questions, but we’re excited and optimistic about the possibilities for the future.

This class will explain how to manage and improve the construction process of linear infrastructure projects with BIM 360 software in order to improve data quality and reduce costs and time by 60%. The digitalization of these processes enables us to retrieve relevant data and information directly in the construction site, reducing wastefulness and promoting sustainability. Currently we are managing roughly 150 projects with BIM 360 Docs, BIM 360 Field, and BIM 360 Project Management software. For these projects we mainly implemented three processes: the quality check, the inspection survey in BIM 360 Field, and the design variation check. The workflows are valid either if the project has been developed with BIM methodology or through the traditional method. The management of the company can use data and statistics to analyze the progress and the status of the works through powerful dashboards made with Forge. We will show the workflows improvements with a clear metric analysis.

Availability of BIM 360 Model Coordination software made the clash detection portion completely automatic; i.e., uploading files to a given space or a folder in BIM 360 Docs software automatically triggers cloud-based, Navisworks-like, clash-detection service. However, how to interpret those result and resolve the issues are currently completely left up to the users. In this session, we will explore possibilities to further automate some portion of analyzing clashes and suggesting possible resolution options. We approach this goal by making use of all the available Forge capabilities, combining the BIM 360 Model Coordination API to detect clashes, keeping track of issues and resolution with the Issues API to accumulate as a knowledge base, and suggesting/making possible changes to the model using Design Automations for Revit software. We will share how much we accomplished with our dream project, and how we did it.

In the big data and artificial intelligence era, Saipem's new business model considers innovation an integral part of corporate culture. Having a large amount of information available, and above all being able to count on a great calculation capacity that can improve decision speed and managing complexity, is one of the principles that will make digital and big data analysis increasingly essential in the present and the future. In construction departments, talking about data means a clash with the complexity of data usability and management. This class will showcase how Forge enabled Saipem to aggregate big data from different sources (SmartPlant 3D, Tekla Structures, Oracle, Navisworks software) to analyze them (Microsoft Power BI) and to get an updated data set of information applying a full BIM (Building Information Modeling) approach. This class will describe the steps toward getting Power BI dashboard directly in Forge, approaching the system architecture necessary for this integration.

In this demo, we will walk through a simplified example of capturing real-time manufacturing data (cutting temperatures) from a hobby-class computer numerical control (CNC) router as it machines aluminum, visualizing that data on the visual model of the part being manufactured. Cutting tool and workpiece temperatures are direct indications of cutting efficiency and tool health. Mapping temperatures can help validate and suggest adjustments to feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to achieve the nominal chip load. While this is far from an industrial solution, this demo will show the power of IoT manufacturing within a simplified context to explore the utility and promise of cloud-based manufacturing solutions, built with Forge.

There are a variety of formats that the Forge viewer supports. The Model Derivative API enables translation of more than 60 different types of source file formats. Yet, there is one format ubiquitous in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry that does not find its place in the list—RFA. There could be various ways to visualize RFA files in the viewer; the most common is: conversion to a format that's supported by Forge, though it's not the fastest or most effective. In this class, we'll look at a workflow that can help developers optimize up to 90% of their Forge credits usage. Accomplishing this requires building a headless Revit plug-in using the Revit API, preparing it for the Design Automation API, processing the outputs using the Model Derivative API, and finally rendering individual Revit families in the viewer. We'll also look at how we can give end users the ability to switch between multiple family types, as well as access the Instance and Type parameters directly in the Forge Viewer.
