Designing timber connections is critical to ensure the structural integrity of timber constructions. An artificial system for designing timber connections would typically involve a combination of computational algorithms, databases of material properties, and engineering principles. Integrating AI systems with a code-checking system in Revit software allows engineers to explore different solutions and be certain of compliance with calculation regulations. Grouping and optimizing nodes, analyzing new node solutions, and automatically creating calculation reports in Revit can greatly reduce modeling and analysis efforts. We will also present a system capable of inserting nodes automatically and designing them according to the calculation actions present in Revit.

Cerro Corá Station is not a typical engineering project. It’s a 50-meter-deep and 50-meter-diameter cylindrical subway station, designed to accommodate two future subway lines intersecting within a single structural volume. The central structural element? A massive cylindrical retaining wall with four large structural openings—a challenge for any engineer aiming to maintain analytical accuracy and performance. Manually modeling such a structure analytically is time-consuming and a potential source of serious design errors. To overcome this, we developed a complete automated and interoperable workflow that begins with the physical geometry in Revit software, uses custom Dynamo routines to generate the analytical model—including the segmental wall with its four massive openings—and seamlessly transfers everything into Robot Structural Analysis 2025 software for structural analysis and verification.

In this hands-on lab, you will hear a real-life story of an architect and an engineer collaborating on specific building design. Together, we will walk through the major steps of the structural analysis workflow, and discover the features fostering the most effective use of tools for analytical modeling in Revit. For some steps, we will use customized Dynamo scripts to demonstrate the power of this visual programming tool that enhances the out-of-the-box Revit features with extra capabilities. You’ll learn how to send the analytical model to analysis software, where we will perform some calculations and design checks to experience the modifications of elements. We’ll close the loop by demonstrating the tools for effective version control and changes monitoring to update our Revit model with analysis outcomes and transition the changes from analytical to physical model. This is a full end-to-end workflow flavored with a dose of humor, which we all like and need.

Modern structural optimization based on reducing materials has facilitated improvements for some structures like canopies and bridges. However, when applied to buildings, these approaches to optimization are less appropriate, as they can impact internal building layouts, frustrating our architectural colleagues. Procedural generation—a method for using algorithms to generate geometry—when combined with more familiar structural optimization like Generative Design in Refinery, offers us a new methodology that can drastically reduce the complexity of the problem. It achieves this by mimicking human processes and applying them to the option generation process, such as aligning the building's structural frame with key features in the building layout, like cores and atria. This technique also offers the opportunity to include multidisciplinary constraints by adjusting the building structural frame to match the position of internal features, such as internal walls and corridors.

By doing so they spend less time on the repetitive tasks and more energy on the important parts of the design. In this class, you’ll learn how Dynamo can support design automation and computational modeling workflows for structural analysis and design of concrete and steel structures. You’ll learn about the appropriate packages to perform automation in your own daily workflows, and you’ll receive a set of teaching examples.

Structural engineers manage design changes and updates on a daily basis. Coordinating models and drawings while maintaining quality is always a challenge—not to mention working remotely or from home. The DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) principle is an effective approach to managing change during design and construction processes. Linking Revit models with structural analysis tools is one of the biggest benefits and challenges structural engineering teams still encounter. In this class, we will look at best practices for keeping structural models and workflows DRY, including linking models between Revit, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software; managing, coordinating, and sharing models using BIM 360 software; and reviewing construction and fabrication drawings for quality control with BIM 360. Incorporating some of these approaches into your workflows will help you keep up with the pace of change.

Revit 2023 software has completely overhauled the analytical modeling workflow. Now the physical and analytical models have the freedom to act independently. The analytical model elements must be created separately from the physical structure; however, you can still "link" them together. This ultimately gives better control over the analytical model and what it is allowed to represent. These changes are drastic, but don't worry. We're here to help explain how it all works, and have you give it a try in this hands-on lab. You don't need to be a structural engineer or a Revit structural modeler, because we'll show you how you could use the Revit analytical elements to help in the creation of physical walls, physical beams, and many other fun creations. In this lab, we'll also show you how to create your own workflows using Dynamo to customize the automation of the creation of the analytical elements.

After we create the fabrication model in Revit, you will use the collaboration with Advance Steel to create the final fabrication documents: NC, DXF, and detailed drawings.
