Cerro Corá Station is not a typical engineering project. It’s a 50-meter-deep and 50-meter-diameter cylindrical subway station, designed to accommodate two future subway lines intersecting within a single structural volume. The central structural element? A massive cylindrical retaining wall with four large structural openings—a challenge for any engineer aiming to maintain analytical accuracy and performance. Manually modeling such a structure analytically is time-consuming and a potential source of serious design errors. To overcome this, we developed a complete automated and interoperable workflow that begins with the physical geometry in Revit software, uses custom Dynamo routines to generate the analytical model—including the segmental wall with its four massive openings—and seamlessly transfers everything into Robot Structural Analysis 2025 software for structural analysis and verification.

While BIM is firmly embedded in architectural and structural documentation workflows across Europe, structural engineering remains notably behind—particularly in mature markets like the United Kingdom and DACH region. Despite Europe’s €1+ trillion annual construction output, adoption of BIM-based structural analysis workflows is hindered by fragmented toolsets, niche technical demands, and resistance to change. This presents both a risk and a high-potential market opportunity. For some steps, we will use customized Dynamo scripts to demonstrate the power of this visual programming tool that enhances the out-of-the-box Revit features with extra capabilities. You’ll learn how to send the analytical model to analysis software, where we will perform some calculations and design checks to experience the modifications of elements. We’ll close the loop by demonstrating the tools for effective version control and changes monitoring to update our Revit model with analysis outcomes and transition the changes from analytical to physical model. This is a full end-to-end workflow flavored with a dose of humor, which we all like and need.

Designing timber connections is critical to ensure the structural integrity of timber constructions. An artificial system for designing timber connections would typically involve a combination of computational algorithms, databases of material properties, and engineering principles. Integrating AI systems with a code-checking system in Revit software allows engineers to explore different solutions and be certain of compliance with calculation regulations. Grouping and optimizing nodes, analyzing new node solutions, and automatically creating calculation reports in Revit can greatly reduce modeling and analysis efforts. We will also present a system capable of inserting nodes automatically and designing them according to the calculation actions present in Revit.

Modern structural optimization based on reducing materials has facilitated improvements for some structures like canopies and bridges. However, when applied to buildings, these approaches to optimization are less appropriate, as they can impact internal building layouts, frustrating our architectural colleagues. Procedural generation—a method for using algorithms to generate geometry—when combined with more familiar structural optimization like Generative Design in Refinery, offers us a new methodology that can drastically reduce the complexity of the problem. It achieves this by mimicking human processes and applying them to the option generation process, such as aligning the building's structural frame with key features in the building layout, like cores and atria. This technique also offers the opportunity to include multidisciplinary constraints by adjusting the building structural frame to match the position of internal features, such as internal walls and corridors.

In the structural engineering industry, one of the challenges is reducing manual and tedious design tasks. Computational design tools such as Dynamo software give structural designers, engineers, and detailers the possibility to automate the creation of their deliverables to build structures with minimal energy. By doing so they spend less time on the repetitive tasks and more energy on the important parts of the design. In this class, you’ll learn how Dynamo can support design automation and computational modeling workflows for structural analysis and design of concrete and steel structures. You’ll learn about the appropriate packages to perform automation in your own daily workflows, and you’ll receive a set of teaching examples.

This class will cover the workflow between Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software, from the design to the fabrication of a steel structure. In this class, you will learn how to handle the analytical model in Revit, use the collaboration with Robot Structural Analysis to obtain the analysis result, and then use those analysis results to create and verify Steel Connections inside the Code Checking module. After we create the fabrication model in Revit, you will use the collaboration with Advance Steel to create the final fabrication documents: NC, DXF, and detailed drawings.

The technology and tools for computational design in the built environment have never been more powerful or progressive. To complement their specific discipline knowledge, the current and next generation of designers and engineers entering the global workforce are armed with skills ranging from sketching to programming to Building Information Modeling (BIM). As buildings have grown in complexity so too has the power and ubiquity of simulation tools used by different specialist disciplines, with information and processes getting more disconnected up until data is transferred to a common format for delivery. It is time to shift focus away from data toward the spaces between the data. By extrapolating recent innovations in structural engineering processes—such as real-time feedback and gesture-based simulation using Robot Structural Analysis software—we will explore the possibilities of multidisciplinary building simulation using visual programming applications such as Dynamo software to control Revit software and other packages.

And finally you will get surprised how easily you can handle almost any complex rebar design in Autodesk Revit with Autodesk Dynamo.

The Royal Artillery Barracks Olympic Shooting Range was one of the standout arenas created for the London Olympic Games. Located in a traditional setting, this facility caught the imagination of competitors, spectators, and the public, and it demonstrated the power of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in project design, manufacture, construction, and disassembly. There was a focus on workflow to empower disparate parties to embrace real collaboration. The use of technology was essential to achieving high-quality design. We created a 3D structural model of each building, which then became a hub for coordination with temporary frame contractors, manufacturers, and other designers. In this class, we illustrate the workflow used to take the generative models built using Rhinoceros® software into Robot™ Structural Analysis and Oasys GSA to perform structural design and then into Revit® Structure software using the Geometry Gym BIM plug-in.

You've created design using utility design software, but now you wonder if you can exchange the model data with advanced engineering tools to enforce regulatory and integrity checks. This lecture will attempt to show you how to integrate a utility model used for distribution, transmission, and substation into advanced engineering tools like O-Calc, SPIDA, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advanced Steel software. We will also discuss the capabilities of APIs to exchange data between design and analytical tools so that you can plan your integration and extend your utility's workflow without copy/paste data.

This class will show you how to use the Robot Structural Analysis software's comprehensive API to simulate complex structural problems and thus improve efficiency and provide feedback loops. We will review several examples where the API has been used to link Robot Structural Analysis software to other software in order to speed up model generation and help create complicated geometry models with a high level of accuracy. We will show you tips, tricks, and effective practices for generating models that run efficiently, and you will discover how to use the API to extract results in order to provide optimization feedback loops. We will also show you how to use such functions as Result Query and Cache in Microsoft Visual Basic to access data within Robot Structural Analysis software. We will use at least 1 example of this type of workflow to demonstrate how quickly you can create scripts to link software such as Grasshopper to Robot Structural Analysis software, and then continue through to Revit software to produce project documentation and images.

Leeds Station Southern Entrance (LSSE) is a signature new gateway entrance to the existing station in Leeds, United Kingdom. Constructed over the existing river between 2 residential tower blocks, and supported from the existing station structure and Victorian masonry arched viaduct, the site constraints alone make this a challenging scheme. When combined with the multiple curves of the architectural form, it presents a unique set of engineering challenges. This class will be a case study covering how we’ve successfully used multiple Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools (including Rhino software, Grasshopper software, Robot Structural Analysis software, Revit software, and Navisworks software) to engineer a scheme that would be impossible without today's technology and to bring the existing and new build elements together seamlessly. We will discuss the project constraints, the workflows used, and some of the challenges we overcame in design and construction.

This class will explain current methods of base plate and anchoring design in steel structures, and look at their limitations. Then it will introduce a new approach to designing and checking base plates and anchoring of any shape, loaded in any direction. It is based on a new method called component-based finite element model (CBFEM) and has been implemented into the new version of Hilti PROFIS. We'll demonstrate this new approach that lets structural engineers design base plates and anchoring more accurately and efficiently. We'll show various examples and verification studies. We'll also introduce a new workflow from Robot Structural Analysis Professional software via PROFIS into Revit software and Advanced Steel software.

In this class, we will introduce Sensequake sensing-based structural analysis. We have developed advanced software and sensors to provide professional services and a turnkey solution to engineers and asset owners. Our patented technology performs structural health monitoring and seismic assessment solely based on actual data from highly sensitive vibration sensors—saving engineers time, effort, and money—all while providing superior results. This allows for the detection of hidden defects and undocumented structural modifications not detected by visual inspection and traditional engineering practices. In this class, we will explain how sensing technologies can be used for periodic and permanent structural-health monitoring. The assessments are based on very accurate sensing tests, without the need for a finite element (FE) analysis. In fact, our sensing results can be used to calibrate FE simulations build by Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, or other FE packages.
