Human bone is a unique material that grows based on the mechanical loading applied to it. This can cause problems for astronauts, as the loading through their bones is reduced and conditions such as osteoporosis can set in. Surgical implants, which are often used to stabilize bone fragments following a fracture, can inadvertently create similar problems, by reducing the force transferred through the bone itself. This can permanently reduce bone mass and increase the risk of future fracture. This class will discuss the ongoing research into this problem, and will demonstrate how researchers are using generative design in Fusion 360 software to explore new designs for these implants that better aid the natural bone-recovery process.

In this hands-on workshop, we will look at the Cost Management tool within Autodesk Build and how to maximize workflows such as telling the story of a field issue that turns into a change orders, collaborating on pay apps, and accurately forecasting to minimize risk on a project and lead to a more successful project.

Innovation in rural areas solves two problems: providing creative solutions with constraints and supporting traditionally underserved communities. Take the town of Pendleton, Oregon. Known for woolen mills and rodeos, the need to boost the local economy resulted in a drone research facility that is impacting not only the town, but the way companies think about and use drones. As the need for drone solutions increases, the rural location of Pendleton UAS Range (PUR) is a catalyst for new development. With a collective aerospace experience of 50+ years, PUR has attracted companies such as Spright (a medical transport drone testing deliveries with a local indigenous hospital) and Amazon's drone packaging system. This panel will look at the drivers behind Pendleton's innovation, and explore why we should rethink our biases toward urban areas as the sole points of innovation. Panelists will discuss how something as simple as rethinking an airstrip bridges the innovation gap between rural and urban areas.

In this talk, we'll do a deep dive into many examples of people productively applying Fusion 360 to common and uncommon production problems in furniture and millwork, with lots of tips and tricks for all levels of Fusion 360 users. Whether coming from AutoCAD, an AutoCAD plug-in, or Inventor, you'll discover the advantages and limitations of using Fusion 360 for production woodworking. We'll also get into the fantastic CAM and manufacturing toolsets that are built right into Fusion 360 that will greatly accelerate your production, whether you're CNC-empowered or not!

King's College London relaunched it's Engineering department in 2019 with the aim of attracting students and staff to tackle new societal and technological challenges and change the world through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education. In this talk I will describe our journey towards a ‘create-first' programme pedagogy flipping the traditional Blooms triangle to deliver a horizontally and vertically integrated curriculum with design and make at the heart. We will reflect on the emerging benefits of scaffolding project-based learning with design and simulation and highlight the improved design, sustainability, and systems thinking skills seen in our students. Our deep-dive will focus on a first-year integrated design course where students work in teams to design, make, and operate a remote-control ship to collect floating waste in a water tank. Our project-based approach exposes students to a range of manufacturing methods. We have created a series of short workshops for 2D cutting, 3D printing, and three-axis milling and we will demonstrate how instructors can use the Fusion 360 API to automate the modelling of engineering components. In this project-based learning module 200+ students use Fusion 360 (and connections with Simulink and Arduino) to develop high fidelity digital twins of a design, build, and test project, while retaining the open-ended nature of design projects and maintaining a common digital thread throughout the experience.

As a mechanical engineering student in Finland and a CNC machine operator in the metal industry, Muluken Admassu has a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in design, product development, and manufacturing. With his work and studies, he puts sustainability at the forefront. In this session, Admassu will share his journey from Africa to Finland and beginning his engineering work before ever seeing technology advancements. Admassu will also discuss the incorporation of sustainability considerations in his projects and unlocking new technology to go beyond the unexpected.

In those ten years, Fusion 360 has helped both Alex Lobos and his students rethink the way CAD works, enabling new opportunities more effective, efficient, and most importantly, more creative and innovative. Lobos will share the top ten things that make Fusion 360 great. From direct modeling for communication design to collaboration, generative design, and more, he'll dive into how Fusion 360 makes an impact with specific design examples.

"Data is the new oil.” This quote was made more than 15 years ago, and it's more valid than ever. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is in possession of massive amounts of data, but often struggles to turn it into profit. BuroHappold actively innovates in the field, building out capacity to extract, process, and interpret the data embedded in its intelligent models at scale. This involves setting up a multilevel framework, including databases and code infrastructure, as well as presentation layers. A prototype of the system provides two main functionalities that deliver three types of information in a flexible and extendible manner: building queries and running them against Revit models (correctness) as well as periodic extraction of model metrics (project progress and performance). The session will guide you through the thought process behind the undertaking and implementation itself, starting from inception to the current state of the project.

Educators! Have you been tasked with teaching digital modeling and/or 3D printing? In this session, learn step-by-step, tutorial projects for simple consumer items. You can take these fun, actionable projects back to your classes to help get students started. Projects will include: Finding sketches on the internet, turning them into SVG files with an online converter, and using Fusion 360 to turn them into a cookie cutter and business card; Using Recap Photo to turn smartphone snaps of a statue into a reality capture model, importing the model into TinkerCAD, and editing it into a candy jug.

Manufacturing in Autodesk Fusion 360 software continues to expand within the wider Autodesk community. While it expands, there is very limited knowledge on manufacturing as a whole. This course aims to level set, upskill, and provide an appreciation of subtractive manufacturing. This deep dive will focus on capturing manufacturing intent from the design, and we will cover available subtractive methods, programming techniques, and part alignment.

Fail fast, as they say in tech. Our mantra for conceptual design is "Turn every stone.” That's why we've used Autodesk Forma as a tool for optimization and design evolution since it was conceived as a startup in Oslo, Norway. Autodesk Forma has played a pivotal role in the development of our 10-step methodology, which aims to increase the sustainability ambition in our projects. It has finally provided the much-needed support for data aggregation and seamless integration with our modeling software. The implementation of Autodesk Forma in our practice, from sketch to detail phase, has helped us create a transparent dialog with our clients and regulatory authorities, based on rich and objective information. It empowers us to find the best architectural solutions tailored to the unique characteristics of each site. In this session, we're excited to share a selection of large-scale urban projects in Norway that have been shaped up in Autodesk Forma and are transforming the urban fabric, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come.

The traditional method of building walls using studs is labor and time intensive, and results in a fundamentally flawed product, with a substantial percentage of the wall being thermally and acoustically bridged. BamCore has developed a wood-bamboo hybrid panel that is structural and load bearing. It enables the firm to build walls from panels that are prefabbed to customer specifications. It eliminates 80-90% of the internal framing, along with the thermal and acoustic bridges that framing creates in traditional walls. It also reduces the need for hard-to-find job-site labor. This class will cover the design steps we use, CAD-CAM workflows, the marking of MEP locations, and our job-site app, providing a comprehensive view of our industrialized construction processes. We will also talk about the tremendous sustainability of the BamCore system, which comes both from the use of incredibly fast-growing timber bamboo and also the dramatically improved thermal envelopes that our walls provide.

Horizontal machining centers (HMCs) have many advantages, and some disadvantages, over their counterpart. Many struggle with efficiently programming or getting started programming HMCs. This Fusion 360 instructional class will advise different workflows on setting up and programming an HMC. We'll demonstrate tips and tricks to make programming and machining times quicker and more efficient. Before attending this class, we recommend visiting and participating in the Autodesk Factory Experience on the exhibition floor. Prototyping while developing a new product design is critical to ensure delivery of higher-quality parts to market. This step in the product design cycle is, however, typically time-consuming and costly through iterating and purchasing/making individual parts. This is why many product designers have already turned primarily to digital prototyping rather than physical prototyping, so they can ensure on-time product delivery that doesn't break the bank. This class will focus on how you can utilize Fusion 360 and its extensions for digital prototyping, focusing on an Autodesk Factory assembly product. Consumer electronics is a fast-moving segment, where time and collaboration is critical to be ahead of the competition. We'll demonstrate how to effectively experiment with product design alternatives, collaborate with key project stakeholders, test layouts for PCB, simulate structural and manufacturing aspects, and render final product previews, all within Fusion 360.

After graduating from their respective university courses, BAC founders Neill and Ian Briggs set up their own design/engineering consultancy, with Neill leading engineering activities and Ian heading up the design elements. The company was commissioned to work on major automotive projects with the likes of Porsche, Mercedes, Smart, AMG, Maybach, Ford and Bentley, but they also gained valuable experience with smaller brands, too. Over time, Ian and Neill would identify a gap in the market that they believed simply had to be filled – a single-seater, road-legal vehicle that focuses purely on the person behind the wheel and is totally uncompromised. Ian, Design Director for BAC, will walk users through the automotive design workflows and share his experiences on how software from Autodesk and workstation technology from HP, AMD, and NVIDIA, contributes to the Briggs brother's ability to turn their vision into reality.

Generative design is often seen as an alien parts generator. In this session, we will share how we incorporated this design exploration method into our traditional design process, and how we applied the method on a very typical welded parts assembly of an automatic tools changer on a CNC machine tool. With no specific expectations, as we believed it was already fully optimized, we achieved almost 20% of mass reduction, positively impacting the overall machine precision. And as a side benefit—we got really good-looking parts. You'll learn which selection method we used to identify potential parts for generative design and how we defined the success criteria. We'll cover the whole process, from multiple designs exploration up to production and installation itself. We'll also discuss our generative design rollout plan.
