In the design process of highway projects, applying building information modeling (BIM) technology, using parametric design methods, and delivering complete project models is a challenging task. During the design process, issues such as efficient design workflow, data exchange, model segmentation, WBS info, and digital delivery need to be addressed. With parametric design tools like Dynamo software, engineers can automatically create models and complete property assignments based on project requirements, significantly reducing repetitive work and allowing them to focus more on the design itself. This case study will show you the complete parametric design workflow and data exchange for this highway expansion project, with a focus on parametric modeling using Dynamo and Python. Through parametric modeling via programming, stakeholders can achieve efficiency gains of two to three times compared to manual modeling methods for roadbeds, pavements, bridges, and tunnels.

The Brazilian city of Curitiba was declared the smartest city in the world, according to the World Smart City Awards, a prize awarded by Fira Barcelona in Spain. This is considered one of the major honors in the areas of innovation and smart cities. This session will show participants the evolution of the building information modeling (BIM) process in Curitiba. We will especially look at BIM within the scope of the city's urban planning agency (IPPUC) and its executing body for structural works programs (UTAG)—with the implementation of the BIM laboratory (LaBIM PMC), the use of 3D models to present works to city residents, the interactions developed in conjunction with CIM (city information modeling), and the application of the models for the execution process of the works, mainly in relation to quality management, scope, and schedule.

openBIM workflows enable interoperability and collaboration among different software applications and stakeholders in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry using neutral, industry-standard formats. These workflows center around Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), an open and neutral data format for building information modeling (BIM), but they also include other formats and technologies such as BCF (BIM collaboration format), bSDD (buildingSMART Data Dictionary), and IDS. The introduction of Autodesk Construction Cloud as a project platform for engineering companies has often been the subject of presentations. We at DB Engineering & Consulting—the international engineering and consulting company of Deutsche Bahn—have a special challenge: We've been using Vault software for 10 years with about 2,500 users. With this high standard in CAD data management, a migration to Autodesk Construction Cloud is particularly challenging but necessary, due to the increasing percentage of building information modeling (BIM) methodology being used in our projects. In our session, we will outline how we plan to migrate from Vault to Autodesk Construction Cloud in two stages: First, we'll use Autodesk Construction Cloud for Revit modeling while CAD drawings remain in Vault. During the second stage, we'll also transfer the CAD part to Autodesk Construction Cloud. We'll share our solutions to address Autodesk Construction Cloud drawbacks for draftspersons, ensuring even Vault experts can adapt.

Model-based technology can virtually identify and eliminate clashes. Unfortunately, that doesn't always translate to accurate, conflict-free layouts on the jobsite, especially when done separately by each trade contractor. New research from Dodge Construction Network shows that this traditional noncollaborative approach to jobsite layout is inherently inefficient, and frequently generates cross-trade conflicts and construction errors that cause multiple quality, safety, productivity, cost, and schedule issues. The research further shows that more-coordinated and collaborative multitrade processes greatly improve outcomes for everyone involved, especially when taking advantage of exciting new automation technologies that use model data.
