This roundtable discussion is designed to bring to the table those like-minded individuals who have the following in common: A desire to share their experiences based on a successful deployment of Building Design Suite workflows that take full advantage of the range of product solutions available in the suite. The roundtable explores past and existing project-based solutions and best practices while looking to use the range of products in Building Design Suite in a successful project workflow. The discussion also looks at technical problems that were encountered during this process and explores suggestions on how to resolve them. The concluding part of this roundtable addresses the lessons learned and looks to exchange a set of practical hints and tips that can assists the group in achieving a highly productive workflow.

Using real-life examples, we will demonstrate how complex projects and their demanding schedules be improved from the use of Autodesk Building Design Suite. The class will cover a Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow from the very beginning of the design and construction process. We will discuss how early decisions have a lasting impact on the building’s performance and lifecycle cost, explore the process of program development and client engagement using advanced visualization techniques, and finally, delve into the process of document production and coordination. This BIM-enabled workflow determines a team’s ability to collaborate and deliver a product that will exceed the client’s expectations.

Dynamic shifts have emerged in the digital realm of building design and physical methods of off-site fabrication. Buildings are increasingly manufactured/assembled rather than constructed/crafted. This class will present these digital procedures for modelling buildings in Revit whilst simultaneously assembling and managing your building components through Dynamo and into Inventor for fabrication. This entails navigating a hierarchy of linked/nested Revit models, families, and formulas; aligning the design BIM with detailed fabrication models in Inventor. Dynamo will be applied as a tool to automate, annotate, and design the building layout with assembled components. Orchestrate the building model, drawing sets, and work instructions in Revit alongside Dynamo to lay out building components, visualise building data, component relationships, and simultaneously assemble Revit components for building site context, component assembly in factory layout, and final modules in transportation.

This class will showcase new high-performance building design workflows from Autodesk, Inc., and their applications in the early design stages. We will explain and explore through the case study application current technology and new features in FormIt 360 software and Revit software. This class will cover processes and best practices for using conceptual analysis tools as integrated, iterative, and collaborative parts of the design process from a Design Team’s point of view. It is critical to use performance analysis tools early when aiming for high-performance design goals. With generative AI, Autodesk Research is expanding what's possible within design tools, and showcasing new design experiences that are fast, intuitive, and accessible.

Computational design enables architects to design parametrically, using visual programming to automate design processes and simulate, script, customize the parameters of, and generate design solutions—making it easier to explore ideas and innovate. Design practices big and small are turning to computational design to solve problems in new ways. Students with experience in computational design have a distinct advantage in their careers. Hear how Autodesk Dynamo is helping the next generation design structures and buildings and create using digital fabrication.

The contractor and architect from the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design—which is striving for full certification of the Living Building Challenge—will explain how Autodesk tools were used during the pursuit, award, design, preconstruction, construction, and post-construction activities. They will cover lessons learned from the most interesting and challenging aspects of the project related to the high standards of regenerative design and the 20 Design Imperatives for the Living Building Challenge. The team used Revit software, Assemble software, Navisworks software, and BIM 360 software to identify and work through solutions. The presenters are not software experts; however, they are experts in project management, regenerative design and construction, and systems coordination, and they are excited to share how Autodesk software contributed to the project.

Intended for structural engineers, this class covers an integrated process for the rapid analysis of complete concrete buildings and the detailed design of concrete floor and foundation systems modeled in Autodesk Revit Structure software. We will demonstrate a workflow through a step-by-step process of extracting concrete building information from a Revit model, creating a 3D finite element model of the building, and generating structural analysis results—all within minutes and without having to first fine-tune an analytical model. Analysis results include member forces, floor system deflections, building modal vibration responses, and load takedowns. This process saves time and gives engineers an easy method for quickly checking the structural response of concrete models. The class will also cover options that are available to carry out detailed design of the concrete floor and foundation systems of any building. We will use the latest concrete building design software from ADAPT and Revit Structure in this class.

In this class, we will present the use of Autodesk CFD for a new building project with a goal for net-zero energy compliance. The building and construction industries are responsible for about 40% of the global energy use and about 30% of the global carbon emissions, contributing to climate change. Energy-optimized building design is one of the green building principles that, by 2030, could reduce the carbon footprint and achieve reduction of building-related emissions by 50%—and deliver net-zero buildings by 2050. In an endeavor to design energy-efficient buildings, adoption of new technologies for enhancing indoor environment quality, thermal quality, and lighting quality are imperative. And implementation of such technologies needs validation for performance. Modeling and simulation software such as Autodesk CFD could be used to estimate the performance of the built environment and compare different design decisions in order to realize the opportunity to reduce energy consumption and, therefore, carbon emissions.

Discover decarbonization design strategies for building design, as well as a data-informed workflow for implementing these strategies to decarbonize the training Revit House. We’ll use Revit software, the Revit One Click plug-in, and One Click LCA to show you how to extract and manage quantitative and material data to measure the embodied carbon emissions associated with the design of the Revit House. After examining the results, and discovering the carbon hotspots, we’ll decide on appropriate decarbonization strategies, aiming for a 40% reduction in line with the World Green Building Council goal. We’ll then apply those strategies to the Revit House. Integration between Revit and One Click LCA has streamlined the data-informed workflow and provides carbon data when the designer needs it. The designer can use this data to make design decisions and subsequently deliver measurably lower carbon buildings.

But is the built environment in danger of losing social and equity values as a result? The powerful combination of GD and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has the potential to assist architects in improving building functionality and sustainability, enhancing value for architects, developers, and residents. However, ethical and social sustainability values may be overlooked if the metrics of the GD and GAI are not instructed to identify and prioritize them. This class will combine findings from a multidisciplinary research project from Carnegie Mellon University, and real-life architectural projects by HED. Learn how to prioritize important equity and social sustainability values in human-in-the-loop AI powered design frameworks, making ethical and socio-sustainable design decisions measurable and transparent to all stakeholders, for a more equitable and resilient built environment.

Autodesk industry partners with CSC and Design Data have combined their expertise to deliver the first smooth Building Information Modeling (BIM) process for the entire design of steel structures. This process links Fastrak™ from CSC, Revit Structure software, and SDS/2 Connect from Design Data software. This class demonstrates how a fully code-compliant design of the steel structure can be produced in Fastrak, which can be synchronized with Revit Structure to create BIM documentation and with SDS/2 Connect for the full design and detailing of the steel connections. The fully designed Revit model can then be exported to SDS/2 Detailing software to create the fabrication model. Integration between Fastrak, SDS/2 Connect, and Revit Structure is a powerful solution for the steel industry. Bridging the information gap between design and fabrication shortens timelines, enhances project communication, and ultimately reduces project costs.
