A transformation of an organization's legacy engineering design systems first requires a vision. This class will discuss the vision of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for 3D intelligent design to transform San Diego Gas & Electric's transmission and substation engineering design and construction process. The transformation includes the implementation of a number of Autodesk, Inc., Solutions in an integrated mosaic of engineering design workflows. We start with conceptual design using InfraWorks software. We will follow this with detailed design and analysis with AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Inventor software, AutoCAD Electrical software, and Substation Design Solution software. A fundamental concept is the adoption of 3D model components for engineering design standardization and construction standards publishing and training. The implementation of BIM 360 software for construction quality assurance / quality control management will complete the transformation. We will discuss a strategic 3-year plan, and we will demonstrate visuals that are being used to convey the vision and build consensus across the organization.

This class will examine the challenges and the most efficient practices to effectively implement a comprehensive Data Management Solution for capital projects. We will explore the various components of data management and the different roles in these projects. Covering both Vault software and Microsoft SharePoint software, we will reveal how to most effectively utilize both tools. We will touch upon document control, master document register management, transmittals, model management, deliverables, progress tracking, and much more.

Where are we four years after the launch of ISO 19650? Digital transformation is accelerating as we speak, and standards are coming to make our life easier. Everyone wants to be the first runner and the best in class. But how do we cope with this speed and get the job done? This class will give an example of SYSTRA digital transformation strategy and the effort needed to launch the implementation of ISO 19650 on both the organizational and project levels. We’ll give an overview of the lessons learned and describe "must" actions to be deployed. We’ll uncover how ISO 19650 served to ramp up our digital engineering and data management capabilities, and how it pushed us to invest in development of our own digital solutions based on Autodesk Forge. We’ll also briefly present their implementation on different ongoing projects. To conclude, we’ll look at the direction we are heading right now on our digital transformation journey. The BIM 360 and Autodesk Forge digital solutions will include eLODy, Pablo, Carbon Tracker, and SafebyBIM, among others.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) of Victoria, Australia, is delivering a major digital transformation program to manage the transport infrastructure of a state where 6+ million people live. With more than $100 billion in transport infrastructure projects in development through 180+ major projects and with 20,000+ people in jobs, the DTP needed to implement digital engineering standards, processes, and technologies to effectively and securely manage the asset lifecycle from planning to operation and maintenance. This program aims to enhance efficiency through better collaboration and flow of information throughout the project lifecycle. The DTP will present its current digital engineering and digital asset information management initiatives. The session will focus on the road map for streamlining building information modeling (BIM) standards, workflows, and technologies associated with the digital delivery process, and how Autodesk, Esri, and IBM Maximo helped the department better align its processes with technology.

Current the method of teaching engineering drawing consists of teaching the fundamentals such as orthographic projection of views and asking thee students to visualize what the object will look like in 3 D. this makes it very challenging and often times difficult for the students to comprehend the principles. A new method is developed by a group of faculty members at an engineering college in India under the mentorship of the speaker and Dr. Rio D'Souza, the Principal of the engineering college. The method was then validated with faculty in other engineering colleges and the students. All of them have found the new approach to be far superior in achieving the outcomes of better educated students and more motivated faculty..

This class will discuss detailed Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow and setup for the complete design engineering, simulation, and construction of this engineering challenge. Attendees will learn the interface of Building Design Suite along with third-party software to manage the design iterations for optimization and changing specifications from owners. This will be an in-depth presentation on how BIM facilitated various design disciplines to collaborate in a seamless manner to enhance the construction efficiency and building performance. A major gas utility client recognized the benefits of 3D design and engaged Autodesk consulting to develop a strategy and solution to replace their existing 2D CAD tools. The project introduces Building Information Modeling (BIM) for pipeline engineering design with an agile implementation plan to accelerate adoption. The recommended solution used Plant Design Suite, including AutoCAD® P&ID software and AutoCAD® Structural Detailing software, in combination with AutoCAD® Electrical software, AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, and Vault software to completely replace the existing systems and provide significant productivity improvements. In this class, we discuss the process that was conducted to develop the system solution business and functional requirements, the solution design, and the business justification for 2D to 3D design adoption. We also discuss the implementation strategy based on best practices and agile methods to completely train and upgrade the design and engineering data management environment.

In 2015, IMI Precision launched a 5-year mission, FIX8, to fix, focus, and grow. It comprised 8 strategic enablers, including investing in group-wide IT and infrastructure, and working together as a single simplified organization. To support the FIX8 mission, there was a need to standardise our workflows globally to remove waste and increase productivity, to meet the aggressive innovation targets we had set. To achieve our goals, we partnered with Autodesk to implement Vault Professional globally, replacing our disparate systems, to create a backbone for effective data management and collaboration. This industry talk will explore the steps taken and lessons learned, through managing and implementing a global data migration program comprising of 31 sites, across 20 countries, involving a dedicated IMI Global Engineering Applications Team, Autodesk Consultancy, and 5 Autodesk Partners.

Air pollution is a global health issue, and affects more than 90% of the world’s population. Our team at University of Colorado Boulder, with support from the Autodesk Foundation, has developed air-quality feedback systems and other environmental sensors to help improve public health around the world. We use engineering technology to address global health problems. In partnership with a team from Autodesk Pier 9, a health-based air-quality feedback system (the desktop lamp featured at Autodesk University’s Factory exhibit) was developed using distance design techniques. Fusion 360 software’s CAD, CAM, and Render workspaces were used to collaboratively design the product with inputs from team members in multiple cities, and the electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) integration with EAGLE software was used to design the open-source circuit board. This class will introduce the field of global engineering, with specific examples of how we use CAD, ECAD, and CAM to rapidly prototype solutions to global health problems, from Rwanda to San Francisco.

This class provides guidance for creating Revit software models that you can use effectively for facilities management. We will focus primarily on the creation of simple models that you can use as the foundations for facility plans to be used for space management, asset management, and maintenance. This class will focus on the basics, such as generating proper area plans, creating areas, and placing assets. We will also explore concepts including level of accuracy; level of development; and communication of your modeling needs to service providers who are creating models for you during the design, engineering, and construction process. We'll wrap up this session by connecting our model to a Computer-Aided Facilities Management / Integrated Workplace Management System (CAFM/IWMS) Solution so we can explore our results in a more traditional facilities management environment.

Deriving a product design into a manufacturing process is a continuous challenge. Catching up with the latest design changes is often a manual and error-prone, slow process performed in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. With the Vault PLM solution, this process can be vastly improved as both the engineering BOM and the manufacturing BOM are accessible and linked in a single system. Workflow mechanisms help ensure that data received from engineering gets transitioned properly and extended to define manufacturing processes. The resulting manufacturing then gets published to ERP upon approval of manufacturing change orders. In this session, you will see how this process is managed in an integrated environment. We will use a custom-built smart editor to automate this process as much as possible and to provide visual indicators to help ensure a proper alignment of structures in an easy way.

This class will cover the benefits of using BIM 360 Docs as a central hub for many different stakeholders in a plant project. In this session, we’ll look at ideal workflows for transferring and managing data models from Mechanical, Plant and Process engineering into BIM 360 Docs. Based on a real world experience we will share best practices and lessons learned on how to synchronize engineering data from model authoring systems into the Cloud. We will discuss and demonstrate the importance of all project participants having access to these models with intuitive tools to search and analyze models, and in doing so, creating full project awareness. The session will conclude with the various positive business impacts companies can achieve by implementing such a hybrid environment.

Integrated cross-disciplinary engineering requires integrated modeling. In turn, this necessitates a computational environment that promotes automation and facilitates collaboration and interoperability. At BuroHappold Engineering, Revit software is the principal Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, used across the organization for model coordination and deliverable production. Based on this, BuroHappold has developed global protocols for interdisciplinary collaboration, information exchange, and retention and reusability of computational knowledge. Drawing on the Revit software database, a visual programming environment such as the Dynamo extension platform can act as conduit and integrator between modeling, analysis, and production. We can use Dynamo extension’s built-in package manager in conjunction with resources such as a company intranet for dissemination of workflows as well as for version and dependency tracking. The effectiveness of such sharing of computational protocols and standards is a major component for collaboration in design practice.
