Landscape Architecture Revit Workflows for Collaboration and Documentation

Of all the design disciplines in the construction industry, landscape architects have been left behind the furthest by BIM. Too often, the BIM model of the building allows high-quality coordination but is let down when it comes to Landscape Architecture, going back to relying on 2D workflows. We at Gensler's largest Landscape Architecture studio based in London have been developing a workflow to work in BIM/Revit for the past 4 years. This presentation is a summary of the work that we have been doing, shown with real-world Landscape Architecture projects from around the world. We will show our end-to-end workflow for Landscape Architecture from concept to production documentation including how all the forms of documentation, including drawings, specifications, and schedules have been handled in Revit. We'll also demonstrate how we've been using third-party software such as ArtisanRV in our production process to further streamline our workflow. Through this presentation we hope to be able to demonstrate how Revit can not only be used for Landscape Architecture but how it can be integrated into the virtual design environment.

Revit and Dynamo for Landscape Architects

This class will demonstrate how you can use Revit software for landscape architecture with some assistance from Dynamo extension. Attendees will get an overview of how to use Revit software features such as families to provide typical symbols in plan while providing opportunities for visualization, scheduling to provide quantities, and tagging to annotate consistent information. Going beyond the basics, we’ll use Dynamo extension to show advanced techniques to streamline the design process. This session features Revit and Dynamo Studio. AIA Approved

Using AutoCAD Civil 3D to Create a Landscape Architecture BIM Model

Creating a fully attributed 3D model to satisfy the BIM requirements of a project has become a requirement for many projects due to the BIM Level 2 government mandate. Current BIM software is primarily focused on architectural applications and overlooks the specific requirements of complex and large-scale landscape architecture (LA) and master planning (MP) projects. The talk will outline how we developed a script for Civil 3D to add additional attributes to C3D and AutoCAD objects; Surfaces, Blocks and Solids, the challenges we faced, and how we approached them. The class will follow our workflow on a 200 ha site for a major event, where we used C3D to create a BIM model for LA, lighting, and signage elements, importing them into Navisworks for clash detection and collaboration with other disciplines, such as civil engineers and architects. We will also cover the fundamentals of what attribute data was required, the rationale behind the choices, and how we managed data drops.

Landscape modeling in Revit with Environment tools: Overview and workflows

In this session, you will learn how to create an accurate Revit landscape model with Environment tools and workflows for landscape architecture projects of all scales and types. The Secret to Landscape Modeling with Revit

It is time for landscape to step up its digital game and claim a bigger slice of the design spotlight alongside architects and engineers. This session will explore the direct leap from 2D to landscape information modeling (LIM), with a twist: envisioning AI's role in landscape. This session will explore how Henning Larsen architects transition from traditional 2D design to LIM with Revit tools and workflows, while pointing out both challenges and opportunities. Toward the end of the session, we'll explore how using AI can empower landscapers to optimize resource management, enhance water efficiency, and propel sustainable practices. Furthermore, we'll explore the potential of AI-driven LIM for critical sustainability metrics, such as energy consumption, carbon footprint, and ecological equilibrium. This session will advocate for landscape design's digital evolution, transitioning to LIM with AI possibility, as exemplified by the experiences of Henning Larsen architects.

The Secret to Landscape Modelling with InfraWorks

In 2050, 66% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. Landscape and Urban designers will be required to design more and better cities, with less impact on the environment. One of the most attractive characteristic of Landscape Design is its scale variety, ranging from balconies to huge campuses. In the “The Secret to Landscape Modeling with Revit”, we learned how landscape designs can be built in Revit, as well as the main challenges with the software. Large scale was one of these challenges. InfraWorks is the software that completes the Landscape Architect toolset for large scale modeling. In this class, we will discover how to model landscape elements in InfraWorks. We will also explore how to import information in your model from different data sources (GIS, Revit, 3D Models, Civil 3D) and collaborate in BIM360. Finally, you will learn how to present and visualize your project using Infraworks tools.

Outcome-Based Design: The Shift of Design Technology and Tools

The evolution of design and drafting has increasingly given us tools that inform and expedite our processes. But what can we learn from the implementation of CAD, building information modeling (BIM), and now AI to prepare teams for the future of design tools? Working at a multidisciplinary design firm encompassing planning, landscape, architecture, and interiors has shown me that technology adoption and digital maturity happen at different rates. But regardless of the tools used and efficiency in practice, projects are completed. Exploring the New Energy Landscape

The construction industry’s efficiency gains have nearly flatlined over the last 25 years. Why? The buildings industry remains one of the least digitized. These issues trickle into the operational stage of the lifecycle, where commercial buildings waste an average of 30% of their energy consumption. All told, operational costs and emissions are often 5 – 8x higher than capital costs. These inefficiencies and imbalances derive from misaligned incentives between builders and users. How do we align these incentives to unlock massive efficiency gains across the design-build-operate lifecycle? The shift toward digital BIM processes is part of the solution to more energy efficient homes and buildings by delivering greater agility and long-term sustainability. Introduction to Storytelling: It's Not Just Fairy Tales at Bedtime

The class presents an overview of storytelling, which is the human side of communication. Thought-provoking case studies of master storytellers are presented to stimulate the principle that design matters. Storytelling guidelines are discussed to formulate the combination of best practices, CAD/visualization tools, empathy for the client's perspective, and passionate delivery of design intent. A special emphasis is placed on storytelling in the physical world where the words are actually the visualization of architecture and landscape elements. Workflow case studies that use mixed media Autodesk® software such as Showcase®, Revit®-based software, AutoCAD®, and 3ds Max® Design are presented as real-life examples of storytelling's integration with technology.

Building Asia's Largest Bird Paradise: A Sustainability and Digital Journey

Mandai Bird Park Project is an innovative sustainable-construction initiative in Singapore designed to create Asia's largest bird park in a 23-hectaire nature reserve. The design consists of eight massive walk-through aviaries inspired by diverse habitats, 20-meter-tall waterfalls, and an 84-meter-long archway. As part of the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan, the team had to keep in mind sustainability and preservation goals to minimize changes to the original landscape topology, preserve existing flora and fauna, and replicate a tropical landscape incorporated within the architecture. This intensified the overall construction complexity. The class will show how we fully used building information modeling (BIM) as a single source of truth, reality capture. and cloud platforms, including drone mapping, laser scanning, and 3D surface modeling with Revit, Navisworks, Dynamo, and ReCap software throughout the virtual design and construction (VDC) implementation. This saved us 30% in survey costs, achieved 100% reuse of excavated soil, and prevented the aviaries from clashing with the trees.

Toward Safe and Inclusive Urban Landscapes: Bringing BIM and GIS Together

As urban areas expand, the challenge is clear: evolve into sustainable and inclusive environments or risk growing disparities and instability. Many of the challenges we are trying to overcome are inherently spatial, so we must first understand their immediate surroundings in order to bring solutions to the table. Urban & Infrastructure projects should be able to collect and manage data to identify needs and prioritize them. Through the integration of BIM and GIS, we can adopt a geographic and holistic approach to overcome the challenges ahead of us by enabling the project to be visualized and assessed in that real-world context allowing professionals to enhance project understanding. In this talk, you will learn how to implement GIS (Geographic Information Systems) interoperability with BIM (Building Information Modeling) in early-stage planning to create inclusive and welcoming cities.

S.M.A.R.T. Implementation of Autodesk Forma in an Architectural Office as a Game Changer

This case study shows how effectively Autodesk Forma software was integrated into the design process of NOVA PROJEKT Architekci sp. z o.o. This integration was intended to make it faster and easier to prepare precise urban analyses in the preliminary phase of architectural projects. This allowed for the analysis of multiple options, which is critical for construction projects subject to local and national laws and located on brownfield sites. The initial presentation will set expectations for Autodesk Forma. A test project revealed obstacles in the form of lack of support for some coordinate systems and DXF™ files. A diagnosis based on experience demonstrated that the analysis results would be only approximate. Autodesk support helped create a data-preparation process using AutoCAD Map 3D software, analysis in Autodesk Forma, and in Revit software. The initial design process has been shortened tenfold, and the results made a convincing case for those deciding whether to launch and approve the project.
