This workshop will provide an introduction to lean design and construction concepts. It will highlight the benefits and opportunities that lean implementation provides, and it will give the participants a road map showing how to start using these principles on projects. Lean in design and construction focuses primarily on project improvement by identifying and eliminating waste and enhancing value to the customer. This workshop will not only familiarize the participants with lean vocabulary, but it will also provide them with a roadmap to understand how to employ these concepts in their organizations and on their projects. You've heard about lean construction and production planning—now it’s time to try it out yourself. This interactive workshop will start by addressing the problem of waste in construction and how the Last Planner System improves productivity and schedule reliability. We’ll introduce pull planning: a collaborative scheduling technique that enables teams to develop workflow starting with a goal in mind and working backward, thus enabling successor activities to determine what needs to be completed for them to start their work. Then we’ll put theory into practice in a hands-on, team-based construction simulation developed by DPR Construction, designed to emphasize the importance of pull versus push, reliable flow, and clear subcontractor commitments in the pull-planning process. The class will finish by showing how BIM 360 Plan software helps the last planner by enabling teams to track task commitments and completion, and report on deviations.

In this session, the LATAM TSE team will cover the basics of project management and lean construction principles for on-field tracking and data gathering in order to change the project management (PM) mindset from a reactive approach to proactive approach thanks to Autodesk Construction Cloud on-site implementation. We’ll cover how to digitize current construction workflows and activities without disruptive change within owner-contractor-subcontractor workflows. You’ll see how to apply PM and lean construction with an easy-to-implement approach, simplifying digital transformation for a width approach within any building information modeling (BIM) maturity level construction company.

The project has been a full lean–Building Information Modeling (BIM) project, using Revit Server application and industry foundation classes (IFC). Both landscape and architect (Snøhetta) and structural and technical design (Rambøll) have been working in Revit software “live” with Revit Server application across the country. There has been interdisciplinary checking with IFC and Solibri. The project has been managed using lean methodology and working both on shared models using Revit Server and also virtual design and construction (VDC) / Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE). The design methodology criteria was to provide models for lean construction with limited use of paper drawings and just-in-time principles at building site. The Norwegian Building Authority is the project owner and driver of expectations to utilize lean principles in the 3 phases of planning, design, and construction. The entire design group has been taught lean principles by Porsche Consulting in Germany. The class will cover experiences from all 3 project phases; explain success stories, challenges, and constructive learning points for collaboration; review “zero-failure methodology”; and more. Gone are the days of relying solely upon in-situ mock-ups to generate issues and drive decision-making. With the emergence of the virtual mock-up and virtual reality solutions, mock-ups can now be generated much earlier in the coordination process, thus saving you time and money by driving the conversation earlier in the design phase. The purpose of this class is to demonstrate how utilizing lean construction methods and various tools (Navisworks software, Revit software, AutoCAD software, and 3ds Max software) coupled with virtual reality tools can enable you to guide the design and owner groups into making meaningful and educated design changes early in the design phase. Through the review of multiple case studies we will demonstrate the cost-benefit analysis of each type of mock-up, as well as determine which types of information we can obtain from each.

The benefits of adopting the Last Planner principles include increased reliability, greater savings in time and cost, less wastage of materials, and greater utilization of plant. The benefits are further enhanced by collaboration with the supply chain, where they can review their elements of a plan in line with main contractors, and feed into BIM 360 Plan web service, therefore streamlining interactions. The gains made through BIM 360 Plan in this process (such as staying in the field longer) reduce time spent compiling reports in the office and improve Planed Percentage Complete (PPC) with accountability for lost time weekly—enabling root-cause analysis to aid in targeted software and provide a platform for detailed whole project as-built data. However, the methodologies and tools used by lean practitioners are relevant in almost any field. In this session, we'll discuss lean, and how the various concepts and tools can apply to technology. Note: While explained in this class, this is not a session on the more widely known concepts of Scrum and Agile in technology. Mr. Ma is the technical director of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) 8. CSCEC is the world biggest construction corporation, ranked Fortune 52. CSCEC 8 is the major subsidiary of CSCEC, with more than $40 billion in annual contracts. There are approximately 3,000 Building Information Modeling (BIM) engineers in CSCEC 8 who are dealing with BIM-related business. This class will show you how to use BIM technology (especially Autodesk, Inc., Solutions) to strengthen the construction management capabilities for general contractors in China, and we will share the real BIM values with megaproject experiences. Nearly ten years after its first BIM project, J.C. Cannistraro is sharing some lessons learned from modeling, fabricating, and building some of the most high-profile hospital and biotech projects in the Northeast. Using primarily Autodesk® Navisworks® and Autodesk® Fabrication software, we will explain how we use collaborative thinking, Lean methodology, and BIM tools throughout the preconstruction and construction phases to maximize the efficiency of delivery and installation on every project.
