Bergen’s Light-Rail Project Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategy was shaped by strict demands: 300-plus professional stakeholders, lots of tunnels, heavy storm events, traffic, and tracks running down the middle of Norway’s second-largest city. The unique execution plan created for this project was customized from a mix of private and government guides. The resulting plan included model specifications, level of development (LOD) progressions, quality assurance criteria, and collaboration policies. The project capitalized on iConstruct, FME, and A360 cloud-based collaboration service to automatically create and compose the federated/collaboration model. A powerful set of custom information was added to objects at this collaboration stage to further facilitate the mapped processes. Autodesk Consulting and Premium Support assisted to optimize and customize workflows. And Autodesk Consulting is currently working on a joint Autodesk, Inc./Sweco cloud solution, so the entire project team will have an updated model available every day as this project moves toward completion. Building Information Modeling Execution Planning (BIMEP) is the most important step that few are taking in their current workflows. Architects speak of "standard of care" and "traditional scope" and contractors talk in terms of "time saved." Owners want to save as much money as possible. Can BIM really make this process easier? This course will try to tackle the big questions that BIM poses in our industry today and hopefully provide the answers necessary to get your next project kicked off on the right foot. Using a recent, very large, multidisciplinary project, we will show how the planning process should start early and be monitored throughout the project. This is not a "one and done" scenario.

Increasing demand for digitally integrated design and execution in the building and construction industry places great demands on the establishment of data environments. Processes and organizational measures must be established that support project execution, where data loss is avoided, where the entire project lifecycle is considered, and where it can be monitored and analyzed directly from models. At the same time, customers and partners want to follow the project development to a greater extent on a transparent data platform in new forms of collaboration, such as alliance and integrated project delivery (IPD). Add to this the fact that automation is to a greater extent a crucial competitive parameter and an important factor in reaching project deadlines. This presentation describes how a project can be established organizationally and digitally to achieve a high degree of seamless collaboration across disciplines, companies, and software. It also describes some of the digital solutions that have been established, as well as some ambitions for where the project is going for the next seven years. The article is based on the Fornebubanen, which is a multidisciplinary project with 52 disciplines and a construction budget of just more than 1.6 billion Euros. The goal is to have the most information such as bills of quantities, commercial requirements, CO2 imprints, classification, and operation and maintenance information linked directly to the models. These models are combined into several coordination models for a holistic and multidisciplinary representation of the total digital project. Processes, quality assurance, ICE (simultaneous design or "integrated concurrent engineering"), design reviews, tender basis, and execution basis are all based on the project's digital 3D information models. These collaboration models are produced as geographic information system (GIS) models for overall understanding and as technical collaboration models for issue handling and technical assessments and communication. Gamification and a digital asset model will be presented to the stage it has been developed.

Digitization is potent in AEC planning. Construction execution though is non-standardized as individuals work experience-driven without any real approach so far for a systematic plan-do-check-act methodology. Closing the gap between planning and execution via IoT and field software has a two-fold benefit: first it increases productivity and happiness in the field by clear focus and automation of standard tasks such as reports but more importantly this data can feed BIM and planning representatives with insights on how to optimize within and beyond the single project. We would like to discuss the possibilities in the Autodesk community on what could be achieved by bringing our field data closer to the experts of the Autodesk planning tools to have a seamless team work of software users and construction execution colleagues in the future.

Within the industrial water market, it can be a real challenge to bridge the gap between tools that are great for designing buildings and tools that are great for designing process plants. Achieving design synchronization between spatial and schematic designs with a high level of confidence is the ultimate goal. However, producing process schematics and spatial drawings and managing the equipment data becomes complex when dealing with traditional data silos in current project execution processes. True data-driven workflows will require innovation and disruption to achieve next-level results. This is one story of how Revit software, Dynamo, and Forge have helped us look at this traditional problem from a new perspective. We’ve solved some longstanding challenges, and we still have some unanswered questions, but we’re excited and optimistic about the possibilities for the future.
