Building with Robotics and Prefabrication

Combining new kinds of automation can make construction more efficient and more predictable

Individually, technologies such as laser scanning, additive manufacturing, prefabrication, and volumetric modular construction can deliver incremental improvements in construction. But by combining them creatively, architects and contractors can achieve radical improvements to the construction process, making it faster, safer, and more predictable. Amr Raafat of Windover Construction shares examples of his company’s innovative work, from mapping as-built conditions and performing real-time QA/QC overlay with LiDAR and drone-based photogrammetry to assembling a new school building from modular components in less than a day in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the speaker

Amr Raafat is VP of Virtual Design & Construction and Technology at Windover Construction. He brings 20 years of experience, combining expertise in architecture, engineering, and construction, and specializes in adoption of new technologies to enhance planning and reduce risk. He received the 2019 Innovator of the Year Autodesk AEC Excellence Award. He holds a master’s degree in Architecture from the Boston Architectural College.
