Total Guide to Virtual-Reality Visualization: Hardware Edition
This roundtable will focus on different available virtual-reality (VR) hardware options, with the purpose of implementing VR into architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) workflows. We will have an in-depth discussion both about the tethered VR options like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, as well as about more-affordable mobile options like the Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, and others. Every VR platform has strengths and weaknesses. We will discuss which VR platforms perform best paired with specific workflows for optimal end results. We will discuss everything from setting up and optimizing the VR hardware and available accessories to desktop/laptop/mobile requirements and hardware specifications needed to ensure an optimal AEC-VR experience. We will showcase different ways we use VR in the AEC industry, paired with appropriate hardware. VR can realize major savings in various VR workflows that include 360 renderings, VR walk-throughs, existing conditions exploration, virtual mockups, and many others. This session features Revit, 3ds Max, and Autodesk Stingray.

It is no small thing to leave a mark on our fast-changing, complex world. As architects, we design for people in one of the most permanent design fields. This lasting impact makes inclusive design our foremost value and responsibility. To do this, we need to develop a deep awareness of the social, cultural, and environmental needs of the people we serve. The proliferation of the digital toolset has given us the ability to transcend traditional architectural practice for the first time in generations. Capitalizing on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), we have the ability to better understand the people who inhabit our buildings by simulating experiences related to vision, mobility, and communication. We can’t expect to truly comprehend an individual’s contextual and cumulative experiences, but if we are able to tap into others’ abilities and sensorial comprehension, our designs can be more sensitive to the broader community and cause fewer impediments in the built environment.

Virtual Reality Applications in Transportation Design Education

Vehicle design requires the development of virtual and physical tridimensional models to translate concepts generated by freehand drawing and renderings. This iterative process is very valuable but highly resource-consuming in time, cost, and effort-not only in the modeling process itself, but also in learning time, prototyping, and finishing. With schools tied to the duration of academic terms and student budgets, projects are limited to only CAD and/or scale physical models. However, recently available virtual reality (VR) devices offer alternatives to bridge that gap, enabling full-size 3D drawing exploration and visualization of CAD in small and full scale. This session will discuss the use of VR software and Maya software for initial exploration, as well as VRED software for visualization of vehicle concepts using the HTC Vibe. It describes where in the design process these tools are used, as well as the setup used at the Transportation Design Program at the University of Cincinnati.

Virtual Reality as a Design Tool: A Case Study
This class will be an in-depth look at one firm's road into virtual reality (VR) and how we use it as a design tool. The road was unpaved and littered with skeptics and the unknown. Pushing forward led us somewhere unexpected. We'll run through a case study involving upwards of 10 active projects that benefited from and pushed our knowledge of VR. Using a live Vive demonstration, we'll go inside these projects and show how they benefited from this new technology. There will be time at the end for questions, and the opportunity for attendees to get hands-on with our builds. This discussion will include a basic understanding of our workflow, translating models from Revit software into 3ds Max software then into the Stingray gaming engine and also Unity.

The Virtual Mockup: Parametric Design and Optimisation of Complex Faﾍade Panels in Virtual Reality
Nowadays available parametric modelling techniques allow for easy generation of geometrically complex faﾍade elements. Evaluation of aesthetical quality of created design variants is often performed using 2D representations whereas physical 3D models are costly. Combining parametric design with design visualisation in virtual reality (VR) allows for aesthetical evaluation, review, design, and optimisation of unlimited alternatives on a full scale without the need for physical mock-ups. Speeding up design process and lowering potentially costs for mock-ups. This combination of virtual reality and parametric modelling has been applied in the design of the eye-catching faﾍade for the new Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, The Netherlands, in 3 alternative workflows. One part of the facade consists of 'bone'-shaped elements. Their complex 3D geometry was generated using a Grasshopper model. This parametric model was live connected to a VR model of Revit through an automatic cloud connection using Flux.io, Dynamo and Enscape. Design modifications in Grasshopper were synchronised within seconds to the VR world. This allowed the design team to assess dozens of variants per hour to optimise the faﾍade for transportability of elements while remaining aesthetical pleasant. Combining parametric design with VR allows for quick iteration of design variants while experiencing the performance and aesthetics of the design, not limited to a fragment but for the complete building. This increases the speed of design iterations which may increases efficiency or may allow for a more sophisticated design. Potentially, a costs and time reduction for physical models can be realised. Although physical models will still require for the 'feeling of the design' and as a test of the production process, now the most likely variant can be selected for the mock-up.

Virtual Reality in the Real World: Transmedia, Planes, and Automobiles
Virtual reality (VR) has been brought to the forefront recently with Oculus VR's Oculus Rift. In this class we will discuss how the emerging technologies around head-mounted displays have reignited VR for those of us in visualization, media, and marketing. We will showcase tips and techniques to use in VR projects, and we'll discuss how this technology can raise the bar in your own projects. We will base the class around profile projects, including the VR Red Bull Air Race experience and stand. This experience started with highly accurate LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scans of the racecourse. Following that, 3ds Max software was used to texturize the models, and then Unreal Engine 4 was used for creation. A physical stand was also designed and engineered by taking 3ds Max software plans back through AutoCAD software and straight to manufacture. The project was also released on mobile platforms, including the new 3D-printed Altergaze mobile-phone VR accessory. We will discuss this device and what it means for rapid prototyping and the open hardware revolution.

Tools Not Toys: Estimating/Scheduling in Virtual Reality with BIM Data Sources and Stingray
In this class, students will learn how Skanska created high-quality, interactive estimates and schedules in virtual reality (VR) by linking external Building Information Modeling (BIM) data sources into Autodesk's Stingray interactive engine. First, we'll demonstrate how Skanska exported BIM data from Revit software into an external data source. Information in the external data source will be organized and sorted. Then, we'll import that information into Stingray in various configurations to create interactive, immersive environments leveraging a repeatable workflow that enables our clients to visualize different design, cost, and scheduling options in VR. As a result, clients will be able to visualize 4D schedules and 5D estimates. They will be able to choose from various design and material options and see the costs associated with them. Finally, they will be able to export the information from Stingray to an external data source. Benefits of estimating and scheduling in VR include realistic design visualization and real-time decision making.
