In this Hands-On Labs, we'll explore the workflows between InfoWorks ICM and AutoCAD Civil 3D. While this is not a superficial, unnecessary, or overly bad sequel, this Hands-on lab will explore real-time collaboration we challenge two teams to execute a whodunnit flood simulation to save the little town of Topper. InfoWorks ICM enables team collaboration and empowers engineers to reach beyond single-purpose tools tools to evaluate various options against a multitude of rainfall events within the context of the entire watershed. This Lab will provide users the opportunity to save the town of Topper - together by leveraging Civil 3D data, and InfoWorks ICMs integrated catchment modeling to evaluate the town for possible flood damages.

The Trinity River Authority of Texas adopts a comprehensive wastewater management approach by seamlessly integrating InfoWorks ICM software with both network and plant model representations. This case study demonstrates the benefit of implementing a small 2D domain within an existing 1D InfoWorks ICM model to optimize the size and location of a planned storage facility and reduce overland flooding in a dense suburban neighborhood in the City of Toronto. Recent flooding imagery captured in 2018 and 2020 showed significant flooding in Woodborough Park and visible damage to facilities. The project team planned and designed drainage and storage mitigations by building a small-scale 2D surface model of the park and surrounding catchment area (39 hectares) within the larger 1D InfoWorks ICM model being used to plan and design the Fairbank Storm Trunk Sewer System Project. This approach enabled the designers to optimize the size of the storage facility and realize a 35% reduction in construction costs. We’ll present the approach used to develop the model, and there will be a discussion on what considerations should be given before adopting this approach to ensure the maximum benefit to the project.

In updating the Master Drainage Plan for Brookings, South Dakota, ISG faced challenges reconciling flood risk maps with community experiences. Despite a doubling of the flood-risk area, doubts arose due to discrepancies with historical records and incomplete evaluations of existing flood-reduction efforts. Using InfoWorks ICM software, ISG employed advanced modeling techniques to generate a more accurate flood map, enabling prioritization of mitigation projects. Stakeholder engagement ensured realistic modeling, leading to actionable results and strategies for water quality improvement. This approach underscores the importance of informed modeling in building resilient communities amid climate change uncertainties.

The Ruby scripts introduced modifications to the inference tool, enabling the adjustment of pipe slopes between two defined points. This innovative feature was developed by partnering with Autodesk to set minimum slopes based on pipe diameter, offering precision and streamlined workflows for complex engineering tasks. By using these customized scripts, Kimley-Horn significantly improved the speed and accuracy of its modeling process. Additionally, SQL queries enhanced the ability to quickly assess pump performance. This involved summarizing results and pinpointing capacity limitations with respect to specific level-of-service parameters. By automating the identification of pump outcomes, the SQL tool helped optimize data analysis and project execution.

The groundwater infiltration model (GIM) has traditionally been reserved for combined sewer systems—but prolonged wet weather response in separated sanitary systems demands a new approach. This presentation will explore how the Trinity River Authority of Texas (TRA) and its consultants redefined modeling practices by applying GIM to better simulate multi-week infiltration events. Historically considered unsuitable for sanitary systems, GIM proved essential for capturing peak flows and volumes critical to treatment-plant sizing, storage planning, and operational strategy. According to HABITAT III, roughly a quarter of the world's urban population—equivalent to the combined populations of Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States—lives in slums. In São Paulo, IBGE found that 1.2+ million people live in slums. These areas are becoming increasingly dense, which poses a challenge for sewage and drainage systems. Paraisópolis is the densest slum in São Paulo, and its streams have been occupied by housing.
