Integrating BIM and GIS data empowers better infrastructure

BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information System) evolved as separate systems. BIM is for detailed 3D views of buildings and infrastructure, while GIS conveys detailed 3D views of the geographic context. Integrating data from these two siloed systems was a challenge for many years, but thanks to the partnership between Autodesk and Esri, it’s getting increasingly easier to connect them and situate buildings and infrastructure in the real world. This is particularly important for civil engineers, according to Eric DesRoche. So whether you’re deciding how many lanes a highway should have or calculating risk due to flooding or hurricane, you have the information and the insight you need. Ultimately, that supports better design, better asset management, better communities, and a better world.
