Integrating BIM and GIS data empowers better infrastructure
BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information System) evolved as separate systems. BIM is for detailed 3D views of buildings and infrastructure, while GIS conveys detailed 3D views of the geographic context. Integrating data from these two siloed systems was a challenge for many years, but thanks to the partnership between Autodesk and Esri, it’s getting increasingly easier to connect them and situate buildings and infrastructure in the real world. This is particularly important for civil engineers, according to Eric DesRoche. Eric DesRoche is a senior manager for infrastructure and AEC design at Autodesk. He is focused on the development and tactical execution of new products and applications for the use of geospatial data. He holds degrees from the University of Calgary and the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
