Leveraging Immersive Technologies for Collaborative Design

Take a tour of the latest cloud-based VR and AR tools that help stakeholders participate in the building design process



 

As architects, engineers, and their customers and collaborators were forced to work remotely during the lockdown of 2020, many of the processes they used to show and iterate their designs became impossible. Video conferences and data sharing in the cloud bridged some gaps, but to bring architectural ideas to life and move them forward, designers and architects needed new tools. Ernesto Pacheco shares the solutions his team at CannonDesign implemented. Using new extended reality platforms like Arkio, Mental Canvas, Gravity Sketch, and TwinMotion in conjunction with Revit and BIM 360, they were able to bring collaborators and stakeholders into the design process in an immersive, experiential way that was often better than the conventional in-person processes they had relied upon for so long. He predicts that his team will continue to rely on these tools and processes in the future, even after the lockdown ends.

Ernesto Pacheco is director of visualization at CannonDesign. With more than 20 years of experience in the field of architecture and visualization, he is responsible for research and implementation of new technologies into the visual communications process.
