Starting with AI-assisted design, participants will see how design teams generate multiple layout and system options, instantly visualized in 3D models and analyzed through Power BI dashboards to reveal quantities and costs—empowering faster, smarter decisions early in the process. In manufacturing, each module and component is tracked using the Asset feature in Build. QR codes are assigned to every asset, linking physical elements to their digital counterparts.

This session will investigate how Autodesk Forma software can support transportation-focused projects through its out-of-the-box capabilities, including site analysis, massing, and analysis. This session will share the design process of the conceptual designs of a signature pedestrian bridge and an arena roof. Both structures are unique and somewhat complicated. The iterative nature of the designs prompted the use of both Revit software and Dynamo software for a coordinated, efficient conceptual phase. To facilitate concept development, the geometry of the structures was created using Revit conceptual massing and adaptive components. Then, to help minimize the rework associated with verifying the feasibility of each design iteration, the structural engineer used Dynamo to help automate some of the structural analysis-pulling information from Revit into a spreadsheet, and ultimately into structural analysis software. The use of several tools and applicable technology let these projects efficiently move through the conceptual phase and into design. This session will share, in detail, how all the models and scripts were created.

The Dynamo extension is exciting, and the examples of its capabilities are awe inspiring, but are they practical in a real-world structural workflow? When an engineer creates a Dynamo script that resembles a bowl of spaghetti but will create some elaborate structure, is that practical and useful on a daily basis? While the farfetched and futuristic capabilities are exciting for probably 1% of projects, are they applicable to the other 99%? This session will focus on the other 99%. Due to the perception that it is only good for the crazy stuff, many structural engineers have not explored the Dynamo extension. Instead of ignoring a fantastic technology, engineers should learn ways to utilize Dynamo. This roundtable will offer an environment for structural engineers to share ideas for utilizing Dynamo to create innovative solutions to real-world, everyday problems. Note: This roundtable was created with structural engineers in mind, but all disciplines are welcome to come share practical applications of Dynamo extension. This session features Dynamo Studio, Revit, and Revit Structure.

Can you manage without drawings? Can you design long-span bridges in Revit software? Of course! Through creative use of Revit, the Revit API, and Dynamo we have designed a 520-meter cantilever bridge—the Trysfjord Bridge—completely drawing-free, as a part of a 19-kilometer highway project in the southern part of Norway. We will use the model of this bridge as the use case for the presentation, and it is the sole delivery to the contractor. Governmental demands of drawing-free design are not solved by any out-of-the-box software, yet our approach yields the possibility to harvest high-quality data for construction and manufacturing directly from the model. We’ll investigate how to identify the contractor’s need for information, exemplified by solutions for formworks, tendons, and tabulation for slip forming, with model objects aligned with the requirements for the specifications given in the tender documents. Satisfying these demands requires a sound review of the model, and we’ll describe how to automate this.

In this class, you will learn how to connect your Civil 3D models into the Dynamo environment using C# programming language and the Zero Touch interface. Learn how to connect to a running Civil 3D application using the Civil 3D COM API, and create customized nodes for common Civil 3D object types. We will then import the Zero Touch library into Dynamo Studio, where we will apply the new nodes into a Dynamo canvas and extract Civil 3D model data for analysis or construction. Finally, we will investigate how we can transfer data from within Dynamo back into our current Civil 3D model objects. This session is intended for those wishing to extend their Civil 3D customization skills, capitalizing on the power of the Dynamo interface.

What are the main benefits Dynamo can bring to civil infrastructure modeling? To what extent should visual scripting be used, and to which Revit elements' parametrics? This class will cover these areas and show the application of Dynamo to real civil infrastructure projects.

My own experience at Hawkins\Brown has taught me that a significant hurdle in the implementation of computational design workflows into an office is new users getting over the fear factor of interacting in a visual scripting environment. We have had success in overcoming this hurdle by developing custom GUI nodes for Dynamo, that allow complex multistage scripts to be run without the need to interact with Dynamo.This session will provide attendees with a step-by-step guide on how to create a Winform ComboBox dropdown selector UI custom node directly in Dynamo using Python. Once complete, I will also identify how only 20% of the code needs to be adapted to be able to create a number of further UI’s including Select a file, Textbox input, and Warning message.The workshop utilises the Winform GUI library as part of the Microsoft .NET Framework which typically requires an IDE for utilisation. However Dynamo’s use of IronPython, which is integrated with the .NET Framework, IronPython can use the Winform and other such libraries. This opens the door for all skill levels of users to explore GUI development directly in Dynamo. Given that GUI development is typically not supported in Python there is very little literature on the topic which makes it difficult to learn on your own. This is a key reason why I have decided to propose this session in Python with Dynamo and not C# with Visual Studio as it will provide a source of information for an otherwise poorly document field. This is alongside the fact that it will be more assessable to a wider number of delegates. Having said this, the session could more easily be adapted to cover the same topic but in C# within visual studio. The session will be split into 3 clear sections: 1) Presentation: Providing an overview of the topic; 2) Lab/ workshop tutorial: Providing a step-by-step guide for how to code a Winform ComboBox drop down selection GUI; 3) A live demonstration on how only a small amount of the code that everyone has just written needs to be altered in order to create a different type of GUI.

Japan has a lot of natural disasters. We suffer from damages by earthquakes, typhoons, tornados, flood etc. For those victims of large-scale disasters, temporary houses are provided by the government. With its prefab building technology, Daiwa House Group has built the largest number of temporary houses in Japan. By utilizing BIM, we are challenging to shorten the lead time to provide temporary houses. Two types of programs by Dynamo are under development. One is to create layout drawings with interactive design method and the other is to create Revit detailed models and detailed drawings automatically.

One of the biggest hurdles for architects, engineers, and construction professionals interested in capitalizing on the power of Dynamo visual programming language extension is learning to think like a programmer. In this class, we'll cover several basic programming concepts which, on the surface, may not seem to relate directly to Building Information Modeling (BIM)—but then we'll apply these techniques to Dynamo examples for Revit software workflows, such as placing various types of Revit software families, reading and changing parameters, and creating new project views and sheets. By the time we’ll be finished, you'll have a strong foundation for working more efficiently, accurately, and powerfully in your day-to-day Revit project work. The Dynamo open-source, visual-programming environment extends the parametric functionality of Revit software and Vasari software, as well as functioning as a stand-alone application. It is accessible to both programmers and non-programmers, and it has the ability to graphically script behavior, define custom function, and insert traditional text-based code. The Dynamo extension is developing at a rate that is much faster than most tools in architecture, engineering, and construction; this class will provide insight from the Development Team into recent additions and new functionality on the horizon.

As a result of population growth in developing countries, informal housing has increased significantly. This affects a series of large-scale issues, such as access to water, electricity, and especially a safe environment. In addition, materials and construction practices used in the construction of informal settlements are not always adequate, leading to unsafe structures that are extremely vulnerable to disasters. Among the possible solutions to this global issue, the more sustainable one is the retrofitting of existing buildings to increase disaster resistance. However, considering the magnitude of potentially dangerous houses, the only cost- and time-efficient method to retrofit would be automation. With this in mind, Build Change has designed a workflow based on BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools that reduces data-collection and design time from days to hours. In this class, we’ll describe the strategies used to automate structural designs using Dynamo in a BIM-oriented environment.
