Data Interoperability for Advanced Visualization

VHB created a single unified model for an infrastructure project using data from multiple platforms, enabling better visualization and faster construction. Ryan Noyes shares their process.

Data interoperability has been a long-standing challenge in building and infrastructure. Teams have struggled to manage and merge disparate models and data sets created in separate platforms, from GIS data and BIM models to site plans and CAD designs for structural elements. The result has frequently been data loss, a cumbersome QA process, and significant rework. When Ryan Noyes and his team at VHB needed to get rapid approval from the nontechnical members of the architectural review board at James Madison University for design and construction of a land bridge on campus, they took a new approach: they used InfraWorks to integrate all their models and data into a single unified model. This enabled them to create 3D visualizations of the project in real time, and even take the model into Unity to create an immersive, interactive 3D experience that stakeholders could explore. The result? Faster approval, improved efficiency, and a streamlined design and construction process.
